Database Support
Incident Management
- Investigate and resolve database‑related incidents, including:
- SQL Agent job failures
- Long‑running or blocked queries
- Database performance issues affecting applications
- Backup job failures caused by storage or I/O dependency issues
- Analyze alerts and failures raised via monitoring tools (e.g., Dynatrace) related to database performance or availability.
- Work closely with Application Support and Infrastructure/Backup teams to identify root causes and restore services.
- Provide timely incident updates and maintain accurate documentation in the ITSM tool.
Service Request Fulfilment
- Fulfil database service requests, including:
- Execution of approved SQL scripts
- Data fixes and one‑time updates
- Data extracts and reporting support
- Validation of database objects and configurations
- Ensure all requests are peer‑reviewed, approved, and executed according to defined processes.
- Maintain audit‑ready documentation for all database changes executed via requests.
Database Operations
- Monitor overall SQL Server health, including:
- Job status
- Space utilization (data/log files)
- Performance trends
- Support database backup and restore operations in coordination with Infrastructure/Backup teams.
- Validate backup paths and address I/O or latency issues impacting backup jobs.
Collaboration & Escalation
- Work closely with:
- Application Support for application‑level issues and release validation
- Infrastructure / Backup for storage and backup dependencies (NAS paths, snapshots)
- Network / NOC teams if database connectivity or latency is suspected
- Escalate complex issues to senior DB engineers or vendors with complete diagnostics.
Change & Release Support
- Provide database validation during application releases and maintenance windows.
- Assist with pre‑change and post‑change health checks.
- Support rollback or recovery efforts if database issues arise post‑release.
Documentation & Governance
- Maintain SOPs and runbooks for common database incidents and requests.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) and major incident reviews.
- Support audit, compliance, and operational reporting activities.
Technologies & Tools
- Microsoft SQL Server
- T‑SQL scripting
- SQL Server Agent jobs
- Database backup and restore operations
- ITSM tools (ServiceNow preferred)
- Monitoring tools (e.g., Dynatrace – alert consumption)
Good to Have
- Understanding of database performance tuning concepts
- Exposure to NAS‑based backup repositories
- Familiarity with enterprise application/database dependencies
Skill Level Required
- L2 (Mandatory)
- Independently handle incidents and standard service requests
- Execute approved SQL scripts and fixes
- L3 (Preferred)
- Advanced troubleshooting
- RCA ownership
- Performance analysis and optimization
