Position Summary
The Senior Data Engineer designs, develops, implements, and supports enterprise data solutions that enable analytics, operational automation, and application capabilities across HCA Healthcare. This role partners with business stakeholders, product owners, analysts, project managers, the Automation Center of Excellence, and technical teams to translate business needs into reliable, scalable data products and integrations.
The Senior Data Engineer performs complex data analysis, develops and optimizes data pipelines and support tooling, and contributes to solution design, implementation, production support, and continuous improvement. The role requires strong technical judgment, independent execution, effective stakeholder communication, and the ability to support critical data services in a healthcare environment.
Responsibilities
- Partner with clinical, business, product, and technology teams to understand data needs, implementation opportunities, and technical challenges.
- Perform deep data analysis to inform solution design, data quality, application optimization, and operational decision-making.
- Design, develop, troubleshoot, maintain, reverse engineer, and optimize ETL and data pipelines using technologies such as SSIS, Kafka, Python, and Azure Data Factory.
- Develop and optimize data solutions using relational databases, SQL Server, cloud data platforms, and modern data integration technologies.
- Support healthcare interoperability and data exchange using standards and formats such as HL7, FHIR, EDI, XML, and JSON.
- Leverage public cloud data technologies such as GCP BigQuery, GCP Data Catalog, Azure Databricks, and Microsoft Fabric as appropriate to solution requirements.
- Develop support tools and automation capabilities that improve the effectiveness and efficiency of implementations and ongoing operations.
- Identify and recommend process, architecture, and technical improvements to increase reliability, scalability, maintainability, and business value.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to deliver implementations, escalate risks and issues, and provide clear project status and technical findings.
- Provide production and incident support, including participation in major events and after-hours support as needed.
- Communicate complex data and technical findings clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders through written, verbal, and visual methods.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science required.
- 5+ years of experience in a relevant data engineering or related technical field required.
- 1+ years of experience in the healthcare industry required.
Must Have Skills
- Advanced SQL skills, including the ability to write, tune, troubleshoot, and interpret complex SQL queries.
- Experience with relational database management systems; SQL Server experience preferred.
- Experience with healthcare integration standards and data formats including HL7, FHIR, EDI, XML, and JSON.
- Experience troubleshooting, maintaining, reverse engineering, and optimizing ETL/data pipelines using SSIS, Kafka, Python, Azure Data Factory, or similar technologies.
- Experience with public cloud data technologies such as GCP BigQuery, GCP Data Catalog, Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of data and solution architecture principles, microservices architecture, and distributed systems.
- Ability to independently analyze complex problems, evaluate alternative approaches, and recommend technical solutions.
- Experience supporting technology implementations and production data services in a large enterprise environment.
- Strong Agile development methodology knowledge and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, troubleshooting, and problem-resolution skills.
