Why This Role Exists
WordBerries is at a growth inflection point. As the pipeline expands and new markets, government, and emerging verticals — come into focus, the organisation needs a Senior BD Manager who can architect growth strategy, build scalable lead generation frameworks, manage and mentor a team, and personally drive high-value client closures.
This is not a manager who delegates and reviews from a distance. This is a player-coach — someone who can finalise a pitch deck on a Tuesday and present a new market entry framework to leadership on a Wednesday.
Role Overview
The Senior BD Manager owns the full revenue generation engine at WordBerries. They build the systems, frameworks, and relationships that drive consistent, high-quality business — across India and in new international markets. They lead a team of two, act as quality bar and backup for both, and personally own a portfolio of strategic accounts and new market development.
Core Responsibilities
1. BD Strategy & Framework Design
• Design and own the end-to-end BD framework — from lead identification through to contract closure
• Build segment-specific outreach playbooks for corporates, startups, government bodies, and international markets
• Define Ideal Client Profiles (ICPs) per segment; maintain an active, prioritised pipeline at all times
• Set monthly and quarterly lead generation targets for the team; track actuals vs. plan and course-correct
• Identify and evaluate new market opportunities, verticals, and partnership channels; present recommendations with business cases to the founder and develop content strategy as a sample for pitch
2. New Market Development
•Lead groundwork for WordBerries' market entry: map potential clients, assess localisation/compliance needs, analyse the competitive landscape
• Develop a government BD strategy — identify relevant ministries, PSUs, tender opportunities, and procurement routes for content and communication mandates
• Build and manage relationships with international prospects, intermediaries, and referral partners
• Work with the founder to develop pricing, positioning, and proposal templates suited to new market norms and client expectations
3. High-Value Client Acquisition & Relationship Management
• Personally own a portfolio of 8 to 12 high-value or strategic accounts — from first conversation to signed contract
• Lead discovery , negotiations on large or complex deals; set the standard for how WordBerries shows up in senior client conversations
• Build long-term client relationships that drive referrals, upsells, and multi-year engagements
• Represent WordBerries at industry events, networking forums, and relevant sector conferences
4. Team Leadership & Backup Coverage
• Manage, mentor, and set weekly goals for direct report
• Review and quality-check all outgoing proposals, pitch decks, and client communications from the team before they leave WordBerries
• Act as first backup for both team members — step in on active pitches, client calls, or urgent deliverables if a team member is unavailable
• Conduct structured fortnightly 1:1s; develop individual growth plans each quarter
• Identify training needs and facilitate skill development in sales technique, storytelling, and tools
5. Pipeline Health & Reporting
• Own and maintain the master BD pipeline tracker, updated weekly
• Present a monthly BD performance report to the founder: pipeline status, conversion rates, deal values, and team productivity
•Track lead-to-close ratios and proposal win rates; surface insights to improve conversion over time
• Flag at-risk deals early and course-correct with client or team interventions
6. Compliance, Documentation & Handover
• Ensure all commercial agreements are executed accurately and properly filed; zero compliance gaps
• Lead the client-to-delivery handover process — crisp, documented briefs that allow the content team to execute without ambiguity
• Maintain master client records, contact databases, and CRM hygiene
What This Role Does Not Own
• Content strategy, editorial planning, or execution
• Client-facing creative or design work
• Website management or SEO decisions
• HR, payroll, or administrative functions
• AI vendor coordination (though is expected)
Skills & Experience Required
Must-Have
• 4 to 7 years of business development or sales experience, preferably in a content, communications, creative, or media agency
• Demonstrated track record of independently closing B2B deals, with proof of pipeline owned and revenue personally generated
• Strong written and verbal communication — capable of leading a senior client meeting and writing a compelling proposal without support
• Experience managing or mentoring junior team members, with a coaching rather than controlling style
• Comfort building frameworks and processes from scratch; this role does not inherit a ready playbook
• Proficiency with CRM tools, proposal software, and productivity tools such as Notion, Google Sheets, and Canva
Good to Have
• Prior exposure to international markets — UK, Middle East, or Southeast Asia — or government and public sector sales
• Working knowledge of content marketing, brand storytelling, or B2B thought leadership, sufficient for intelligent client conversations
• Experience with AI tools for research, prospecting, or proposal building
• An existing network in sectors such as BFSI, EdTech, Healthcare, or FMCG
Why WordBerries
• A boutique content and communication agency with a strong voice, distinct positioning, and a growing portfolio of brand-name clients
• Direct access to founders — decisions are fast, ideas get heard, and your impact is visible
• A role with genuine ownership: you will build the BD function, not inherit a legacy system
• An honest, no-politics environment where results are rewarded and autonomy is real
• A platform to develop a new international market from scratch — rare at this seniority level
