About the role
We are hiring a Senior Backend Engineer (5+ years experience) to join the core engineering team of Money EU — a payment gateway and payment orchestration platform handling real-money transactions across multiple countries.
This is a high-ownership, mission-critical role where you will lead the design and development of:
- High-availability, fault-tolerant payment systems
- Complex PSP integrations (Redsys, D24, CoinsPaid, and more)
- Card processing flows (2D/3D Secure, tokenization)
- Intelligent payment routing, settlement, and reconciliation engines
- Secure transaction handling with encryption, signatures, and audit trails
You will be working on real fintech infrastructure where reliability, accuracy, and security of every API call matters. This role requires deep technical expertise, architectural thinking, strong ownership, and the mindset of building banking-grade systems that scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and build backend microservices using Java/Spring Boot with a focus on scalability, resilience, and fault tolerance
- Lead end-to-end PSP integrations (Redsys, D24, CoinsPaid, etc.) — from technical evaluation and design to production rollout
- Design and own complete payment flows: authorization, capture, refunds, chargebacks, callbacks, and webhooks
- Define and enforce security standards: HMAC/AES-based encryption, signature verification, idempotency, and PCI-DSS-aligned practices
- Design intelligent payment routing and orchestration logic (failover, cascading, smart retries, cost-based routing)
- Architect settlement and reconciliation systems ensuring merchants receive accurate, auditable payouts
- Drive performance optimization for high-throughput, low-latency transaction processing
- Set engineering standards: code reviews, design documents, testing strategy, and observability (logging, metrics, alerting)
- Mentor mid-level and junior engineers and raise the overall engineering bar
- Collaborate with product, frontend, DevOps, and QA teams to deliver production-ready features
- Contribute to CI/CD, deployment strategies, and incident response (on-call rotation for critical payment systems.

Skills & Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience, with strong expertise in Java & Spring Boot
- Proven experience designing and operating microservices in production at scale
- Deep understanding of REST APIs, asynchronous/event-driven architectures, and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar)
- Strong experience with MySQL/Postgres — schema design, query optimization, transactions, and handling high-volume financial data
- Solid knowledge of cryptography in practice: AES/HMAC, digital signatures, TLS, and secure API communication
- Hands-on experience in fintech/payments — PSP integrations, card processing, 3D Secure, settlement, or reconciliation strongly preferred
- Experience with distributed systems concepts: idempotency, eventual consistency, retries, and exactly-once processing
- Familiarity with caching (Redis), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, and production incident-handling skills
- Ability to lead projects independently in a fast-paced startup environment
- Excellent communication skills and experience mentoring engineers
Nice to have
- Experience with PCI-DSS compliance or working in regulated financial environments
- Exposure to multi-currency, cross-border payments, or crypto payment rails
- Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK)
