Senior Arts Manager – British Council (India)
Location: Mumbai or Chennai
Contract: Permanent (Indefinite)

Role Purpose
Leads the British Council’s arts and creative industries work in India, managing major programmes (like Art in Action and Creative Growth), building partnerships, and shaping national and regional arts strategy.
Key Responsibilities
1. Sector Expertise
- Acts as a credible authority on arts and creative industries
- Uses sector insights to design programmes and partnerships
- Connects UK and India arts sectors for collaboration
2. Leadership & Management
- Oversees programme delivery, budgets, and contracts
- Manages teams (directly and in a matrix structure)
- Ensures quality, impact, and compliance
- Drives equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and anti-racism initiatives
3. Strategy & Planning
- Supports country arts portfolio planning
- Aligns programmes with regional/global strategy
- Integrates digital tools to improve impact
4. Stakeholder & Relationship Management
- Builds strong networks with artists, organisations, and institutions
- Develops partnerships to support cultural exchange and creative economy
5. Brand & Positioning
- Promotes UK arts sector in India
- Maintains British Council’s reputation as a trusted cultural partner
6. Business Development
- Identifies funding and partnership opportunities
- Supports proposals, contracts, and partner management
- Ensures reporting and learning from projects
7. Programme Management
- Manages end-to-end project delivery
- Oversees governance, procurement, and financial tracking
- Ensures programmes are tailored to local context
Requirements
Essential:
- Strong knowledge of India’s arts/creative industries
- Experience managing national-level arts projects
- Active network in the arts sector
- Experience in governance, partnerships, and programme delivery
- Ability to run digital events
- English + one Indian regional language
Desirable:
- Knowledge of UK arts sector
- Experience with international arts projects
Other Details
- Hybrid work (minimum 3 days in office)
- Evening/weekend event attendance required
- Domestic + some international travel
- Must already have the legal right to work in India
