About Us
At Champ3D, we are pushing the boundaries of advanced manufacturing and rapid prototyping. We specialize in delivering high-precision, cutting-edge additive manufacturing solutions to our clients. We are looking for an experienced and highly technical Application Engineer to join our team and drive our design-to-manufacturing workflows.
About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned Application Engineer who is deeply well-versed in Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM) and has extensive hands-on experience across a wide spectrum of 3D printing technologies. Unlike traditional design roles, this position focuses exclusively on leveraging our industrial 3D printing fleet (SLA, SLM, SLS, FDM, DLP). You will be the technical bridge between a client's concept and a successful high-fidelity print, ensuring that every file is optimized for structural integrity, material efficiency, and post-processing success. In this role, you will bridge the gap between complex digital designs and physical reality, utilizing advanced CAD/CAM tools, reverse engineering, and secondary manufacturing processes like vacuum casting and sheet metal fabrication.
Key Responsibilities
- DfAM Optimization: Re-engineer 3D models specifically for additive processes—optimizing orientation, hollowing parts to save material, and designing internal lattice structures.
- 3D Printing Mastery: Oversee and optimize builds across our core AM technologies: SLA, SLM, SLS, MJF, FDM, and DLP.
- Complex Modeling: Create and repair 3D meshes and parametric models for sectors ranging from Aerospace and Defense to Medical Devices and Artistic Figurines.
- Build Preparation: Expertly manage "Print Prep" (Slicing, Nesting, and Support Generation) to minimize failure rates and reduce post-processing time.
- File Healing: Fix non-manifold geometries, "leaky" meshes, and inverted normals to make files "print-ready."
- CAD/CAM & Modeling: Utilize SolidWorks, Creo, and Fusion360 to design, modify, and prepare complex geometries for production.
- Reverse Engineering: Transform physical parts into highly accurate digital models using 3D scanning and reverse engineering workflows.
- Advanced Prototyping: Lead projects involving Vacuum Casting (highly critical) to produce high-quality, short-run production parts.
- Cross-Functional Manufacturing: Integrate Sheet Metal Fabrication principles when hybrid manufacturing approaches are required for client projects.
- Client Consultation: Act as the technical subject matter expert, advising clients on the best materials and manufacturing processes for their specific applications.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in a 3D Printing Service Bureau environment.
- Engineering Software: Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or PTC Creo.
- Mesh & Prep Software: Strong knowledge of Magics (Materialise), Meshmixer, or nTopology.
- Artistic Engineering: Ability to use Rhino, ZBrush, or Blender for organic shapes, statues, and surface refinements.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of support strategies, thermal warping in SLM, and shrink factors in SLS/SLA/FDM.
- Additive Expertise: Deep, practical knowledge of operating, troubleshooting, and designing for SLA, SLM, SLS, MJF, FDM, and DLP systems.
- Secondary Processes: Strong practical experience with Vacuum Casting workflows (silicone tooling, polyurethane casting).
- Analytical Skills: Strong background in Reverse Engineering and DFAM principles.
- Bonus Knowledge: Working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication techniques and constraints.
