Job Purpose
We are looking for a competent and detail-oriented Secondary Design Engineer with 5–7 years of experience in UK power distribution projects. The role focuses on the design and engineering of protection, control, and SCADA systems for primary substations (up to 400kV) supporting DNO/IDNO/ICP frameworks. The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of protection schemes, control philosophies, and UK utility standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Design of secondary systems for substations (11kV to 400kV), including:
- Protection schemes
- Control and interlocking systems
- SCADA and RTU integration
- Preparation of detailed engineering deliverables:
- Protection & control schematics
- Wiring diagrams (AC/DC)
- Cable schedules and interconnection diagrams
- Relay configuration and logic diagrams
- Develop and review protection philosophies and coordination studies
- Selection and specification of:
- Protection relays (distance, differential, overcurrent, etc.)
- Control panels, RTUs, and communication systems
- Ensure compliance with UK DNO/IDNO standards and specifications
- Interface with primary, civil, and commissioning teams
- Participate in design reviews and ensure QA/QC compliance
- Provide mentorship to junior engineers
Key Skills & Competencies
- Protection schemes for transformers, feeders, and busbars
- Substation automation and SCADA systems
- Control and interlocking logic
- Experience with UK standards and frameworks (e.g., UKPN, SSEN, ENA, IEC)
- Familiarity with:
- Numerical relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Schneider)
- IEC 61850 communication protocols
- Proficiency in tools such as:
- AutoCAD / ETAP
- Protection setting tools (e.g., DIGSI, PCM600, MiCOM - preferred)
- Understanding of earthing, DC systems, and auxiliary supplies
Qualification & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- 5–7 years of experience in secondary design within UK utility/consultancy projects
- Progress toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (preferred)
- Experience working on DNO frameworks (e.g., UKPN, SSEN)
- Exposure to IDNO/ICP connection projects
- Experience with substation automation systems and IEC 61850-based designs
