STC is seeking candidates to hire a Data Integration Developer to support the National Weather Service (NWS) and Accenture Federal Services (AFS) on the AWIPS Application Environment (AAE) contract. AWIPS (Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System) is the mission-critical platform used by forecasters at National Weather Service sites nationwide to analyze environmental data and issue the forecasts, watches, and warnings that help protect lives and property.
This role focuses on supporting the development and maintenance of data integration services and backend applications used within operational weather systems. Responsibilities include building and supporting REST APIs, integrating external data services, processing and validating datasets, and assisting with cloud-based backend services using AWS technologies.
The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment alongside backend engineers, data architects, and technical stakeholders to support reliable and scalable integration services and data processing pipelines. The role is well suited for an early-career developer interested in backend development, cloud technologies, and environmental data systems.
Responsibilities
Specific duties will include:
- Assist with the development and maintenance of RESTful APIs and backend integration services.
- Support integrations with external data providers and third-party services.
- Help develop mock APIs and integration testing tools.
- Assist with creating and maintaining OpenAPI specifications and API documentation.
- Support backend services and cloud-native solutions using AWS technologies.
- Perform data transformation, validation, and quality checks for large datasets.
- Assist with processing geospatial and environmental datasets.
- Support event-driven and streaming data workflows.
- Help troubleshoot integration issues and support testing activities.
- Collaborate with backend developers and technical teams using modern software development and GenAI-enabled tools.
- Document data flows, interfaces, and integration patterns.
- Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, code reviews, and team meetings.
- Support operational weather and environmental data systems utilized within the National Weather Service forecasting enterprise.

- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related technical field, or equivalent experience.
- 1–3 years of experience in software development, backend development, or data integration work.
- Familiarity with REST APIs and backend service development.
- Basic experience with cloud technologies such as AWS is preferred.
- Familiarity with data processing, transformation, or validation concepts.
- Experience with Python, Java, or similar programming languages is preferred.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Interest in cloud technologies, environmental data systems, and modern software development practices.
Desired Experience
- Familiarity with AWS services and cloud-native application development.
- Exposure to geospatial or environmental datasets.
- Experience with API documentation tools such as Swagger/OpenAPI.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, or CI/CD concepts is a plus.
- Experience working in Agile software development environments is preferred.
