Job Overview: The Headmistress/Headmaster is primarily responsible for driving and
overseeing the smooth running of the academic program of the school. He/she participates
in decision making process as part of the senior leadership team and plans improvements
that address the school’s academic goals. The Headmistress/Headmaster works as a team
leader supervising the planning and implementation of the academic curriculum as well as
the co-curricular activities.
Main Roles & Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning
Develop strategy linked to [in consultation with Deputy Principals (DPs) and Instructional
Coaches ( IC) ]:
• Whole school yearly priorities [academic and non-academic]
• Implementation plans [including milestones and monitoring and evaluation (M&E)
linked to the above
• Any other changes at the school level
Reviews:
• Other Programs and Services (P&S) teams' yearly priorities and implementation
plan
• Domain Experts’ (DEs) subject-level priorities and goals [with DPs and IC]
• IC's plan in terms of DE development goals and strategy [along with DPs]
Leadership Development and Training
Leadership Development of DPs through:
• One on one sessions
• Combined learning walks and observations – aimed at upskilling and creating
shared understanding
• Observation of other spaces led by the DPs followed by feedback [section
meetings, result analysis etc.]
Leadership development of IC through:
• One on one meetings to share feedback and suggestions
Leadership development of the heads of RTI / Special Education, Library, Character
Development Program (CDP) and Career Guidance Program (CGP) [internal] through:
• One on one check-ins with heads
• Feedback on the head's lesson plans
• Observation and feedback of their classes
• Appraisal discussion of all the heads reporting to them
Teacher training and professional development
Teacher training:
• Creates whole school trainings along with the DPs and IC
• Reviews subject / DE's department level trainings along with the DPs and IC
• Teacher development [mainly through]:
Learning walks and classroom observations of main and RTI classes as
well as CDP and internal CGP classes followed by sharing trends /
observations with the heads of the respective departments
Curriculum and learning standards
• Reviews curriculums of all grades and subjects [along with DPs] and other P&S
teams
• Ensures scaffolding of curriculum across section based on learning standards,
board requirement and needs of the school
• Does checks with DPs and other P&S Heads to monitor implementation of
curriculum
• Drives periodic review and upgradation of learning standards
Assessments
• Does random checks / sample reviews of assessments across sections and for
different subjects [spread through the year]
• Ensures standard of assessments being consistent across primary, middle and
high school
• Gets an overview of Formative and Summative Assessment data from DPs and
checks with DPs to get updates on the next steps and impact
School culture
• Role models and actively works on school culture rooted in organizational values
• Deals with high level escalations in terms of teacher issues / expectation,
• Deals with high level escalations in terms of student disciplinary issues
• Monitors and evaluates aspects linked to the student values (in focus) at a whole
school level and supports DPs as required
Focus Areas
• Reviews implementation of focus areas [through learning walks, focus groups
etc.]
• Leads monthly M&E meetings for focus areas [which will also include the DPs, IC
and STM] and supports DPs wherever required
Meetings
• Leads business plan-related meetings for academics + other P&S departments
[strategy + operational planning] after the initial HOA-led meeting
• Leads weekly heads meeting
• Lead whole school meetings
• Lead leadership meetings
• Leads monthly focus area M&E meetings
• Leads check-in meetings with DPs and other P&S heads
• Leads all professional development planning meetings
• Leads DE meetings [academic related aspects] which are not led by the IC and
the Head Education Strategy and Learning (HESL)
• Leads performance appraisal meetings of people who report to them
• Participates in review meetings for focus areas led by HESL
• Participate in result analysis meetings and department meetings when feasible
• Participates in leadership stepbacks
• Participate in leadership training meetings
• Reviews section meetings and gives feedback [take turns in going to different
section meetings]
• Participates in international professional development meetings
• Reports
• Review monthly report
• Reviews Business Plan
• Reviews budget
Other Important tasks:
• Monitors academic progress of students and strategizes (in collaboration with
DPs) to enhance student learning levels
• Review implementation of the school’s focus areas along with the Deputy
Principal and Instructional Coaches.
• Contributes to the development of systems and structures to improve teacher
practices within the school.
• Undertakes additional tasks as assigned by the Head of Academics to support
the overall functioning of the school.
• Review student admissions
• Drives the hiring process in association with HOA and DPs
• Liaises with external agencies to explore opportunities for inter-school events and
teacher development
• Ensures that all Education Board-related documentation is carried out in a timely
manner
• Coordinates with allied programs and services for the smooth functioning of the
school
Eligibility Criteria:
• Qualification: Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG) qualifications relevant
to the candidate’s experience; UG in Regular mode is mandatory.
• Teaching Experience: 3–5 years teaching Primary or Pre-Primary grades.
• Leadership Experience: 3–5 years in a leadership role, such as Academic
Coordinator (Primary) or Vice Principal/Principal.
• Language: Strong communication skills in English and Marathi
• Leadership Skills: Ability to lead, mentor and strengthen teacher practices.
