Responsibilities Charge Nurse – Surgery Center of Highlands Ranch
Highlands Ranch, Colorado
The Charge Nurse at Surgery Center of Highlands Ranch is an experienced Registered Nurse who provides clinical leadership, supervision, and operational oversight to the nursing team within a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center environment. The role combines hands-on patient care, staff leadership, and administrative coordination to ensure safe, efficient surgical services and exceptional patient outcomes.
The Charge Nurse serves as a clinical resource and role model, promoting excellence in perioperative nursing care while supporting staff development and maintaining regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Staff Supervision
- Lead, manage, and supervise Staff Nurses and support staff within the surgery center
- Act in full alignment with the organization’s mission, values, and standards of care
- Provide one-to-one supervision, coaching, and annual performance appraisals
- Foster positive working relationships and encourage team collaboration and feedback
- Address staff concerns proactively with a focus on resolution; partner with HR when appropriate
- Challenge unsafe or poor practice and guide staff toward continuous improvement
Clinical and Patient Care
- Promote and deliver the highest standards of perioperative nursing care
- Provide direct patient care as needed, including circulating in the operating room
- Support admission, intraoperative care, and post-procedure patient transitions
- Guide nursing staff in the care of new patients or those with complex or special needs
- Ensure patient-centered, individualized care that promotes safety, dignity, and comfort
Operational and Administrative Responsibilities
- Coordinate daily operating room workflow, including admissions, discharges, and case flow
- Assign nurses and support staff to operating rooms and patients based on acuity and skill mix
- Maintain schedule flexibility and prioritize effectively during high-volume days or emergencies
- Prepare staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage and regulatory compliance
- Monitor supplies, equipment, and inventory to support uninterrupted surgical services
- Communicate changes in policies, procedures, and clinical protocols to all staff
Education and Professional Development
- Serve as an educational resource for perioperative nurses and support staff
- Develop and implement orientation and ongoing training programs
- Conduct training needs assessments to support competency and professional growth
Quality, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, OSHA standards, fire safety, and infection prevention regulations
- Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant nursing documentation
- Ensure adherence to surgery center accreditation and regulatory requirements
- Report injuries, incidents, and unsafe practices promptly to appropriate leadership
- Serve as a named nurse or link nurse as assigned
- Maintain professional relationships with regulatory agencies and external partners
Communication and Collaboration
- Communicate effectively with physicians, anesthesia providers, nursing staff, patients, and families
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and quality initiatives
- Support a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement
Required Skills and Attributes
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and organizational skills

- In-depth knowledge of perioperative nursing practice and OR workflow
- Ability to adapt and remain effective in a high-volume ambulatory surgery environment

Qualifications- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
- Current license to practice professional nursing in the State required
- BLS for Healthcare Providers required
- PALS/ACLS (this can be obtained)
