Position Summary: 

The position involves collaboration with the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Site Operations & Infrastructure Division and the National Laboratories, emphasizing the integration of geophysics, hydrogeology, and geochemistry. The fellow will assist in analyzing large-scale geochemical datasets, modeling reactive transport processes, and supporting laboratory testing using advanced spectrometry methods such as ICP-MS and ICP-OES to characterize engineered barrier systems and geological formations.

Responsibilities

The Intern will support the following objectives daily: 

  • Support field data collection, quality control, and integration into geochemical databases.
  • Perform chemical and physical property testing of engineered barrier materials and repository-relevant rock samples.
  • Develop, maintain, and interpret subsurface and laboratory data models to evaluate system behavior under repository conditions.
  • Assist with the use of analytical techniques such as Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) for chemical characterization.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and program managers to generate technical reports and visualizations.
  • Promote the safe and efficient handling of laboratory materials and ensure compliance with DOE and environmental standards

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must be a US Citizen 
  • Enrolled in a graduate or have graduated at the time of application and have a current cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
