Role Overview
As SAP FICO Lead you own the FI and CO workstream end to end. You drive fit to standard workshops, make the call on brownfield or selective data conversion, design the target architecture including ledger strategy, parallel accounting, group reporting, and Margin Analysis approach, and personally configure and debug when the situation demands it. You lead a team of FICO analysts and ABAP developers, govern the RICEFWS portfolio, and represent FICO in cross stream design forums with SD, MM, PP, and WM leads.
Leadership and Ownership Responsibilities
• Own the FICO workstream end to end across design, build, test, cutover, and hypercare. You are accountable for the workstream outcome, not just your individual tasks.
• Lead a team of FICO analysts and offshore ABAP developers. Set the technical bar, run code and configuration reviews, mentor junior consultants, and surface performance issues early.
• Drive fit to standard workshops with client finance, controlling, treasury, and tax stakeholders. Translate business intent into a clean S/4HANA design rather than recreating ECC technical debt.
• Make and defend architectural calls including ledger and parallel accounting strategy, Margin Analysis design, product costing approach, group currency setup, document splitting configuration, and the right balance between standard configuration and custom development.
• Govern the RICEFWS portfolio. Approve functional specs, review technical specs, push back on designs that increase technical debt, and ensure unit, integration, and regression testing rigor.
• Own month end, quarter end, and year end close support across cutover and hypercare. Lead root cause analysis on close blockers and drive permanent fixes rather than workarounds.
• Represent FICO in cross stream design forums. Partner with the SD Lead, MM Lead, PP Lead, and WM Lead on integration design, account determination, revenue recognition, and inventory valuation.
• Engage directly with client stakeholders including the Controller, CFO office, IT leadership, internal audit, and external auditors. Communicate program status, risk, and decisions with clarity and confidence.
Functional Capabilities, Mandatory
• Expert level CO and Margin Analysis. This is non negotiable. You must have designed and led COPA implementations in either account based or combined account and costing based form, including value field strategy, characteristic derivation, assessment and distribution cycles, top down distribution, and reconciliation to FI.
• Product Costing expertise at design level covering cost component structure, costing variants, costing sheets, overhead allocation strategy, work in process, variance categorization, and settlement to COPA or profitability segment. You should be able to defend why each design choice was made.
• Production Order and process order settlement expertise. You should be able to design settlement profiles, allocation structures, and source structures from a blank slate, and explain the downstream impact on financial reporting.
• Deep FI design expertise across General Ledger including the Universal Journal and document splitting, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, new Asset Accounting, Bank Accounting, Treasury touchpoints, Tax procedures, and Closing operations including foreign currency valuation, reclassification, and intercompany reconciliation.
• Hands on leadership across at least three full lifecycle SAP implementations, with at least two on S/4HANA and at least one as an ECC to S/4HANA brownfield or selective data conversion migration. You should have personally led the FICO workstream on at least one of these as a Lead, not as a senior consultant.
• Mastery of S/4HANA simplifications relevant to FICO including the Universal Journal, the merged CO and FI architecture, new Asset Accounting, the Business Partner model from a customer and vendor angle, Margin Analysis replacing classical COPA, and the implications for parallel ledgers and group reporting.
• Strong integration design ownership across SD, MM, PP, and QM. You should be able to design account determination from scratch for goods movements, billing, production confirmations, revenue recognition, and intercompany flows, and debug an account determination issue without escalating it.
• Working knowledge of Group Reporting, Central Finance, BPC, or equivalent consolidation tooling. Familiarity with SOX controls, segregation of duties design, and audit walkthroughs is expected.
Technical Capabilities, Mandatory
• Ability to read and debug ABAP with confidence. You should be able to step through a posting from source document to ACDOCA with a developer, identify the right user exit, BAdI, validation, or substitution, and review a technical design end to end before sign off.
• Strong table and CDS view fluency across BKPF, BSEG, ACDOCA, ACDOCP, COEP, COSP, COSS, MARC, MBEW, KEKO, KEPH, T030 family for account determination, and the S/4HANA CDS views that replace classic FI and CO tables and reports.
• Hands on experience leading data migration for FICO objects using LTMC, SAP Migration Cobjects, LSMW, or BODS. You should have personally led migration design for GL balances, asset master and history, customer and vendor open items, cost center master, internal order master, and historical CO data.
• RICEFWS architectural ownership. You should be able to size the portfolio, classify objects, prioritize ruthlessly, write a functional spec a developer can build from in one read, and challenge a technical design that adds long term cost.
• Comfort with the modern SAP analytics stack including SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Datasphere, embedded analytics, CDS based reporting, and Fiori app catalog for finance and controlling personas. Exposure to Group Reporting on SAC Planning is a plus.
• Strong diagnostic toolkit including SE16N, ST22 short dumps, SLG1 application logs, ST05 SQL trace, debugger breakpoints and watchpoints, and the ability to walk a junior consultant through root cause analysis as a teaching moment rather than just solving it yourself.
• Awareness of integration tooling including IDOC processing for FI postings, BAPIs such as BAPI_ACC_DOCUMENT_POST, EDI flows touching finance, and the implications of CPI or PI middleware on financial postings.
