Job Summary
The SAP EWM Technical Lead / SME is responsible for providing end-to-end technical leadership for SAP Extended Warehouse Management solutions. This role owns the technical architecture, design, enhancements, integrations, and performance optimization of SAP EWM systems, ensuring scalable, stable, and high-performance warehouse solutions across enterprise landscapes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Own SAP EWM technical architecture (Embedded or Decentralized)
- Define and enforce technical standards, best practices, and governance
- Lead technical decision-making for:
- Custom developments
- Enhancements
- Integrations
- Performance tuning
- Act as the technical authority and escalation point for SAP EWM issues
- Review and approve technical designs, specs, and developments
Development & Enhancements
- Lead design and implementation of:
- ABAP OO developments in EWM
- BADIs, enhancement points, and user exits
- RF framework developments
- PPF actions and condition techniques
- Post Processing Framework (PPF) enhancements
- Guide development for:
- Wave management enhancements
- Labor/resource management
- Yard management
- Slotting & rearrangement
- Optimize custom code with SAP clean-core and S/4HANA guidelines
Integration & Interfaces
- Lead EWM integration with:
- SAP S/4HANA (MM, SD, PP, QM)
- SAP TM
- Non-SAP WMS or third-party systems
- Own integration frameworks:
- qRFC / tRFC
- IDocs
- Web services / APIs
- CIF configuration and troubleshooting
- Ensure transactional consistency and performance across integrations
Testing, Performance & Stability
- Define technical testing strategies:
- Unit testing
- Integration testing
- Volume & performance testing
- Perform root cause analysis for complex production issues
- Drive system optimization for:
- High-volume warehouses
- Peak operational loads
- Lead cutover, mock runs, and go-live readiness from a technical lens
Delivery & Stakeholder Management
- Partner closely with:
- Functional Leads
- Basis & Infrastructure teams
- Integration teams
- Security & GRC teams
- Translate functional requirements into scalable technical solutions
- Provide technical guidance to business and IT leadership
- Support global rollouts and template-based deployments
Mentorship & Team Enablement
- Mentor ABAP and junior EWM technical consultants
- Conduct design reviews, code reviews, and knowledge sessions
- Build deep SAP EWM technical competency within the team
Required Skills & Expertise
Core SAP EWM Technical Skills
- Deep expertise in SAP EWM technical framework
- Strong hands-on experience with:
- ABAP OO in EWM
- EWM BADIs & enhancement spots
- RF development framework
- EWM PPF
- Strong knowledge of:
- Warehouse Monitor framework
- EWM data model and tables
- EWM queue management (qRFC)
SAP Landscape & Platform Knowledge
- Strong experience in:
- SAP S/4HANA Embedded EWM
- Decentralized EWM on S/4HANA or SCM
- Understanding of:
- SAP Basis concepts
- Transport management
- Authorization roles in EWM
- Experience with SAP Activate methodology (preferred)
Experience Requirements
- 8–12+ years of SAP experience
- 6–8+ years hands-on SAP EWM technical experience
- Multiple end-to-end EWM implementations and global rollouts
- Experience supporting high-volume, mission-critical warehouses
Education & Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
- SAP EWM Certification highly preferred
- ABAP or S/4HANA technical certification (plus)
