Essential Duties
The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.
Substitute teachers are an essential part of our district and are necessary for our students' continued learning! Via our substitute scheduling system, Red Rover, substitute teachers cover teacher absences and vacancies in the classroom and are responsible for following lesson plans to maintain and further student learning. Under the direction of a site administrator, site principal, or other appropriate administrator, have the ability and direction to: plan, implement, monitor, and assess a classroom's instructional program. The duties specified below are representative of the range of responsibilities assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.
As the Retired Teacher TK-12 Day-to-Day Substitute Teacher, you will:
- Per CalSTRS, a retiree must wait 180 days/6 months from the effective Retirement date before 1st day of subbing. Although this is the case, you can apply today so you are ready to work on January 5, 2026!
- If your Retirement effective date is June 30, 2025, once hired, you can start working as a substitute teacher on January 5, 2026.
- Execute the full schedule of the regular teacher. This includes the classroom day, study halls, yard duty, and any special duties the absent teacher performs.
- Implement the lesson plans assigned to the class and correct classroom assignments and homework received, as time permits.
- Create and maintain classroom control and discipline that fosters a safe and productive learning environment in accordance with school policies
- Create and maintain a climate of respect and fairness for all students
- Escalate to school administrators as appropriate when a serious discipline problem arises.
- Leave adequate notes regarding what was accomplished in class, a description of problems that may have occurred, and resolutions to said problems, a lesson plan for the next day if applicable, and any other information that an administrator may require.
- Report to school 15-30 minutes before the scheduled start time of each assignment, and remain after the assignment to tidy up the classroom and return any materials to the front office.
- Work a minimum of 10 days/assignments per school year
Minimum Qualifications
- MUST be a Retired SFUSD Teacher, no exceptions
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited undergraduate institution
- Certificate of Clearance (COC)
- Clear CA Teaching Credential
- Negative TB test administered within 60 days of hire
- Clearance of background check (fingerprints)
- Be available for assignments at least once a week, particularly on Mondays and Fridays
- Be flexible and willing to work all SFUSD schools, particularly at our High Potential Schools
- Work at least 5 days during the first semester, or a minimum of 10 days by the end of the school year
