Description

The Plant Project Specialist is responsible for planning and delivering capital and major projects within a site. This role owns project scope, schedule, budget, risk management, commissioning, and operational handover while coordinating internal stakeholders, external contractors, and suppliers. The position emphasizes disciplined project execution, safety, and operational readiness rather than engineering design authority, and supports procurement through development of specifications, RFQs, and contractor selection

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·      Lead capital and major site projects from launch through commissioning and handover to operations, ensuring scope, cost, schedule, and safety objectives are met.

·      Develop and manage project plans, schedules, budgets, and risk registers; provide regular status updates to site and leadership teams.

·      Coordinate contractors and vendors, including onsite activities, safety compliance, quality of work, and adherence to schedule.

·      Support procurement activities by developing scopes of work, technical requirements, RFQs, bid evaluations, and recommendations.

·      Partner with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, Safety, and Finance to align project execution with plant requirements and readiness.

·      Oversee equipment installation, tie-ins, shutdown coordination, and startup support in a live manufacturing environment.

·      Manage project risks, changes, and issues; escalate as needed to protect safety, cost, schedule, and production continuity.

·      Ensure contractor and project work complies with site safety standards, permits, and regulatory requirements.

·      Lead commissioning activities, documentation, and turnover packages to ensure smooth handoff to Maintenance and Operations.

·      Capture lessons learned and support continuous improvement of capital project execution practices.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

·      Strong hands-on experience managing capital or major maintenance projects in a manufacturing or industrial environment.

·      Solid project management fundamentals, including scope definition, scheduling, budgeting, risk management, and change control.

·      Ability to manage contractors and vendors effectively, including safety, performance, and commercial accountability.

·      Working knowledge of manufacturing equipment, utilities, and industrial installations; deep engineering expertise not required.

·      Ability to read and interpret basic technical documentation, drawings, and equipment specifications.

·      Strong communication and coordination skills across operations, maintenance, engineering, and finance teams.

·      Experience supporting sourcing activities such as RFQs, bid comparisons, and contractor selection.

·      Ability to plan and execute work safely in an operating manufacturing facility.

·      Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and priorities.

·      Proficiency with common project tools and Microsoft Office applications

Work in accordance with all company policies and procedures regarding employment, safety, quality, product safety and legality, security, and regulatory compliance as applicable.

 

Qualifications

·      Education: Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent professional experience required.

·      Experience: Typically 5–8 years of experience managing capital, major maintenance, or industrial projects in manufacturing. Proven on-site project execution experience coordinating contractors and plant resources preferred.
