Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking Per Diem Staff Nurse for East Jersey State Prison, located in Rahway, NJ.
The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate patient including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) and their family within the framework established by the correctional system.
- Utilizes effective communication skills by demonstrating respect, concern and courtesy in all interpersonal relationships.
- Uses current knowledge to promote a safe environment for providing health care to inmate-patients.
- Maintains current professional skills and continues professional growth to enhance the practice of correctional nursing and the image of the organization.
- Adhere to personnel policies to enhance the operation of the health care unit

Minimum Education and Experience
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
Certifications/Licenses

CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver’s License is required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
