Job Overview
We are seeking an Engineer (Ruby on Rails) who will play a key role in product enhancements, codebase improvement, and production stability. This role requires strong expertise in understanding and debugging an existing Rails application, implementing robust fixes, and ensuring all changes adhere to defined coding standards and best practices.
The ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable working with mature codebases, enjoys refactoring and improving design, and can balance feature enhancements with technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver product enhancements within an existing Ruby on Rails application.
- Deeply analyse and debug production and non-production issues, identifying root causes and implementing stable fixes.
- Troubleshoot complex issues across application layers including business logic, APIs, background jobs, and databases.
- Refactor legacy code to improve maintainability, scalability, and performance while preserving existing behaviour.
- Ensure all development follows established Rails best practices and internal coding guidelines.
- Write and maintain unit tests to ensure reliability and prevent regressions.
- Enforce code quality standards through linting, reviews, and refactoring.
- Work closely with PostgreSQL and MongoDB for:
- Query analysis and optimization
- Data consistency and integrity
- Schema and data model understanding
- Participate in database design discussions for new features and enhancements.
- Support and contribute to Rails version upgrades/migrations (good to have).
- Collaborate with product, QA, and support teams to deliver high-quality releases.
Required Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
- Proven expertise in debugging and troubleshooting existing Rails codebases.
- Solid understanding of Rails architecture, conventions, and best practices.
- Experience with refactoring legacy code and improving design quality.
- Strong experience in unit testing (RSpec / Minitest).
- Familiarity with code linting and static analysis tools.
- Good working knowledge of PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
- Experience with database design principles, indexing, and query optimization.
Good to Have
- Experience with Rails version upgrades or migrations.
- Exposure to performance optimization in Rails applications.
- Experience working on production-grade SaaS or enterprise systems.
- Familiarity with background processing tools (Sidekiq, Resque, etc.).
