Summary: Under minimal supervision underwrite complex applications with the ability to evaluate and take final action with unlimited face amounts. Sign off on referrals from other level underwriters. Approval authority up to $2,000,000. Responsible for specific product/project as assigned (Audits, Product Development, Underwriting System Administration, Training, and Claims).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Analyze complex information and interpret to reach comprehensive medical and financial assessments based on company guidelines and policy while demonstrating advanced technical underwriting knowledge and skills.
- Effectively manage change, defuse conflict, and negotiate positive results.
- Able to take a cross-functional view of work processes and understand the ramifications to other areas of actions taken and decisions made.
- Handle elevated risk assessment calls from agents.
- Effectively use medical director guidance on complex medical cases.
- Meet department goals and quality metrics.
- Establish strong working relationship with agents/IMOs.
- Provide case clinics and underwriting topics to the department.
- Audits (as assigned): Performs audits on underwriter’s cases.
- Claims (as assigned): Review contestable claims; risk assessment expertise for Legal, as needed.
- Product Development (as assigned): Participate in Society-level product development projects. Oversee and provide management of business analysis/testing required.
- Ability to write rules and/or provide direction to ensure quality risk assessment and compliance with legal and state regulations. Oversee and provide management of business analysis/testing required.
- Participates in Society-level project implementations as underwriting SME.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, bachelor’s degree is preferred; ten or more years of life insurance underwriting experience required.
Certificates, Licenses, Designations, Registrations:
Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), required. Successful completion of the Life Office Management Association (LOMA) certifications and designations: Customer Essentials Certificate; Associate, Customer Service (ACS); and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI), required.

Technical Competencies:
The ideal candidate should have in-depth medical knowledge, as well as a highly developed understanding of financial concepts of insurance needs and estate planning, expertise in product development, data analysis, and familiarity with actuarial pricing of risk. They should be able to effectively train new team members and demonstrate strong leadership abilities.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic Algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions and percentages to practical situations.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Internet software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, LifePro, and Illustration Software, Stellent. Preferred knowledge of writing rules in underwriting engine systems (LifeSuites).
Industry Competencies:
Life insurance product knowledge and experience, compliance, and regulations.
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
