About the role

Summary: Responsible for the performance of the underwriting team to ensure quality risk assessment, quick turnaround, and optimum customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Manages a team of underwriters to ensure effective solicitation, selection, pricing, and retention of desirable business. Provide timely and accurate feedback to underwriters for accurate risk assessment.
  • Reviews second approval cases up to $2 million with 99% accuracy. 
  • Conduct work assessment to ensure service and productivity goals and standards are met for team assigned. 
  • Monitors quality and performs quality control reviews of risk assessment, reinsurance treaty compliance, and risk assessment calls. 
  • Mentors employees to reach operational goals and developmental plans; providing training and educational opportunities for growth.
  • Responsible for developing, documenting, and implementing procedures in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Develops, maintains, and reports on productivity results for individuals and team. Ensures time service standards are met.
  • Manages expenses to budget. Provides analysis and input to budget process, monitors, and reports to accounting on a monthly basis. Ensure invoices are paid in a timely manner.
  • Effectively manage change, defuse conflict, and negotiate positive results.
  • Able to take a cross-functional view of work processes and understand the ramifications to other areas of actions taken and decisions made.
  • Handle elevated risk assessment calls from agents.
  • Effectively use medical director guidance on complex medical cases.
  • Works with reinsurers on risk retention exceptions and development of underwriting guidelines.
  • Manage relationships with underwriting vendors.
  • Establish strong working relationship with agents/IMOs. 
  • Provide case clinics and underwriting topics to the department. 
  • Participate in Society product development and product management activities.
  • Leads or coordinates projects; completes projects on time and budget. 
  • Supports and engages team in identifying process improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Manages a team of underwriters. Is responsible for the direction, coordination, and evaluation of the team. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Society’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is preferred; Ten or more years life underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), required. Successful completion of the Life Office Management Association (LOMA) certifications and designations: Customer Essentials Certificate; Associate, Customer Service (ACS); and Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI), required.

Technical Competencies:

The ideal candidate should have in-depth medical knowledge, as well as a highly developed understanding of financial concepts of insurance needs and estate planning, expertise in product development, data analysis, and familiarity with actuarial pricing of risk. They should be able to effectively train new team members and demonstrate strong leadership abilities.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic Algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions and percentages to practical situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of: Internet software, Microsoft Word, Outlook, LifePro, and Illustration Software. Preferred knowledge of writing rules in underwriting engine systems.

Industry Competencies: 

Life insurance product knowledge and experience, compliance, and regulations.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

The candidate's starting pay will fall within the salary range provided and is determined based on job-related factors, including, but not limited to, the experience; qualifications, licensure and certifications; knowledge; skills; business and organizational needs; and market conditions. Candidates with the minimum necessary experience, qualifications, knowledge, and skillsets for the position should not expect to receive the upper end of the pay range. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
