POSITION OVERVIEW

The Yard Dog Operator plays a vital role in our warehousing and distribution team. As a Yard Dog Operator, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating yard dog trucks to move and position trailers within our facility. Your main objective is to ensure a smooth flow of goods and materials throughout the warehouse yard, optimizing productivity and minimizing delays. This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent coordination skills, and a firm commitment to workplace safety. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Operate yard dog trucks to move trailers within the warehouse yard, following established safety protocols and traffic rules.
  2. Safely attach and detach trailers to the yard dog truck using appropriate equipment, such as fifth wheel couplings.
  3. Conduct thorough inspections of trailers to identify any damage, including tires, lights, and brakes, and promptly report any issues to the relevant personnel.
  4. Maintain accurate records of trailer movements, including trailer numbers, locations, and arrival/departure times.
  5. Collaborate with warehouse personnel to prioritize and coordinate trailer movements based on loading/unloading schedules.
  6. Coordinate with yard spotters and forklift operators to ensure efficient trailer positioning and timely delivery of goods.
  7. Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following safe operating practices.
  8. Perform regular pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard dog trucks to ensure they are in proper working condition.
  9. Assist in general maintenance tasks, such as fueling, cleaning, and conducting minor repairs on yard dog trucks as needed.
  10. Clamp Operation: Safely operate clamp forklifts (bale clamp, box/carton clamp, pole clamp, and roll clamp) with the ability to operate up to a 15,000 lb capacity to move, stack, load, and unload materials, products, and equipment within the warehouse and distribution areas, adhering to all safety protocols and guidelines.
  11. Maintain effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, and other personnel to ensure a clear understanding of tasks and goals.
  12. Assist warehouse personnel as needed in various warehouse tasks. 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  3. Proven experience operating yard dog trucks or similar heavy equipment in a warehousing or distribution environment.
  4. Clamp Certification: Possess a valid clamp operator certification/license, demonstrating proficiency in safe clamp forklift operation (bale clamp, box/carton clamp, pole clamp, and roll clamp).
  5. In-depth knowledge of yard operations, traffic rules, and safety regulations.
  6. Strong spatial awareness and excellent hand-eye coordination.
  7. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and maintenance manuals.
  8. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  9. Physical stamina and the ability to work in various weather conditions.
  10. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team.
