Robotics Software Engineer (UAV/UGV Flight Systems)

About the Role
We are seeking a high-agency Robotics Software Engineer to take direct ownership and accountability of our flight control systems and companion computer architectures. You work with customization of flight controller firmware for specialized UAV and UGV operations to support advanced geospatial data collection and analytics pipelines while collaborating with fellow engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Firmware Customization: Fork, modify, and maintain flight controller firmware for custom UAV and UGV platforms to meet specific mission parameters.
- Companion Computer Development: Architect and deploy software on companion computers to interface seamlessly with external hardware, specialized sensors, and payloads.
- ROS Collaboration: Act as a bridge between hardware and software teams, utilizing ROS/ROS2 to help deploy software and machine learning models directly onto autonomous robotic platforms.
- Secure Communications: Implement and optimize communication protocols between flight controllers, edge devices, and the cloud. Ensuring the absolute security of all telemetry and command transmissions is the utmost priority.
- Systems Integration: Ensure smooth telemetry and data ingestion from edge devices into containerized environments and geospatial databases.
- Testing & Deployment: Conduct rigorous SITL/HITL simulations and lead real-world field testing to validate autonomous missions, security protocols, and hardware performance.
Required Qualifications
- Core Languages: Strong proficiency in C++, Python, and Go.
- Flight Control Experience: Proven track record modifying, compiling, and flashing custom flight controller firmware.
- ROS Experience: Strong interest and capability in working with ROS/ROS2 for complex robotic systems.
- Hardware Interfacing: Deep understanding of embedded Linux, MAVLink protocol, and serial communication.
- Security & Encryption: Demonstrated ability to secure embedded systems and encrypt edge-to-cloud communications.
- Edge Computing: Experience deploying containerized applications directly on edge hardware.
- High Agency: Ability to operate with high autonomy, driving the robotics stack from architectural design to field deployment with a focus on speed and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with spatial data systems and geospatial pipelines.
- Experience integrating edge AI/ML models on companion computers.
