WHAT WE DO
OMOTEC runs competitive robotics programs for students aged 6–18 across WRO, VEX, and FTC. Every FTC season brings a new game — a new robot to design from scratch under real engineering constraints. Our coaches aren't instructors reading off a manual. They're the reason a team's robot actually fits its design intent instead of being bolted together on hope.
WHAT THIS ROLE ACTUALLY IS
This is a specialist role, not a generalist coaching position. Your world is CAD — specifically, teaching FTC students to design robots that translate cleanly from screen to physical build. You're the person a 15-year-old comes to when their drivetrain assembly won't mate properly, or when they need to understand why their linkage geometry binds at full extension.
You'll take students from zero CAD experience to producing real, build-ready assemblies — parametric design, sketch constraints, assembly joints, motion studies, and design-for-fabrication thinking (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC). You're not just teaching software mechanics; you're teaching students to think like mechanical engineers before they ever pick up a wrench.
Expect to work closely with FTC teams through their build season — reviewing CAD models against game strategy, catching design flaws before they become expensive fabrication mistakes, and making sure the Engineering Portfolio has documentation-worthy CAD work to show judges.
YOU SHOULD APPLY IF:
- You have expert-level command of Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape — sketches, parametric modeling, assemblies, joints, motion studies, not just "I've used it a few times"
- You understand mechanical design principles: gear trains, linkages, tolerancing, structural considerations for 3D printed or machined parts
- You've either competed in or coached FTC (or a comparably rigorous robotics program) and understand what a competition-legal, build-ready robot design actually requires
- You can look at a rough student sketch and turn it into a teaching moment about why the design will or won't work in the real world
- You're comfortable working with the 12–18 age range and can hold their attention through genuinely technical material
- You enjoy the discipline of design-to-fabrication — you care whether a part will actually print, mill, or laser-cut the way it looks on screen
YOU SHOULD PROBABLY NOT APPLY IF:
- Your CAD experience is casual or self-taught without production or competition rigor
- You see CAD as a box-ticking exercise rather than the backbone of good robot engineering
- You're not comfortable being the technical authority students and other coaches turn to on design questions
Competition: FTC — CAD/mechanical design coaching
Platforms you'll work with: Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Onshape
Qualifications: Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related background preferred. What matters most is depth of CAD expertise and prior competition or design-build experience — degree is secondary to demonstrated skill.
Prior FTC coaching, competitive robotics CAD work, or professional mechanical design experience will be given strong preference.
