Research Internship Opportunity – Bioinformatics (Microbiome & Microbial Genomics)
I am seeking a motivated Bioinformatics Research Intern to contribute to ongoing research involving microbiome datasets and microbial genome analysis. The project focuses on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data, microbial genomic datasets, and phylogenomic approaches to understand microbial diversity, evolutionary relationships, and functional potential.
The selected intern will gain hands-on experience working with real-world biological datasets and computational pipelines used in microbiome and microbial genomics research. The role is fully remote, with all discussions and mentoring conducted through online meetings.
This internship offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or final-year students in bioinformatics or related disciplines to strengthen their computational biology skills and contribute to scientific research. Interns who make significant contributions to the project will be acknowledged as co-authors on the resulting research manuscripts. Candidates looking for a Master's dissertation are also encouraged to apply.
Duration: 4–6 months
Mode: Remote (online collaboration only).
Responsibilities
- Perform bioinformatic analysis of microbiome datasets, particularly 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing data.
- Conduct microbial genome analysis, including genome annotation, comparative genomics, and functional profiling.
- Perform phylogenomic analyses to explore evolutionary relationships among microbial taxa.
- Assist in data interpretation and visualization for research publications and presentations.
- Support the preparation of figures, tables, and supplementary datasets for manuscripts.
- Participate in online research meetings and discussions with the research team.
- Maintain organized records of analyses and workflows to ensure reproducibility.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree (or final-year student) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or related fields.
- Demonstrated experience in bioinformatics tools and pipelines for microbial or genomic data analysis.
- Familiarity with microbiome analysis workflows (e.g., QIIME2, DADA2 etc).
- Experience working with Linux/Unix environments and command-line tools.
- Basic proficiency in programming or scripting languages such as Python, R, or Bash.
- Understanding of microbial genomics and phylogenetic/phylogenomic analysis is desirable.
- Ability to work independently and manage tasks remotely with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical thinking and willingness to learn new computational approaches.
Applications open till: 31 March 2026
