Brela Innovations Private Limited is a government-supported deep-tech healthcare startup borne out of IIT Kanpur and KGMU, Lucknow.
We are looking for a motivated Research Intern with passion and interest in Biomaterial science, and medical device validation to work on cutting-edge healthcare and sensing technologies. The role involves designing, building, characterizing and testing tissue mimicking agents and polymers against our novel Breast Monitoring Device, along with regulatory research and exploration. This role is going to be dynamic, involving multiple activities along with cross-team collaboration.
Job Description:
Title - Research Intern -Materials and Test Systems
Experience - 0-2 years of experience
Job Type - Permanent (On-site)
Location- IIT Kanpur
Salary - As per industry norms
Key Responsibilities:
1. Research, design, fabricate and iterate tissue-mimicking phantoms, including layered constructs and defined internal heterogeneities that mimic breast tissue
2. Establish the set protocols by which each batch is independently characterized, and validate them against published reference values
3. R&D on repeatability and stability: batch-to-batch variance control, shelf-life management, storage conditions, ageing, and the acceptance criteria that determine whether a batch is fit for use
4. Maintain the developed phantom library and test data as a controlled asset -formulations, batch records, characterization data, retention samples
5. Run a standing literature study across biodegradable and non-biodegradable candidate materials, and convert findings into formulations that can be tested
6. Evaluate material candidates against property, cost, processability, stability and end-of-life criteria, with trade-offs made explicit
7. Work within the biocompatibility standards relevant to skin-contact materials (ISO 10993-5, ISO 10993-10)
8. Document all of the above to a standard that withstands regulatory and audit scrutiny
9. Conduct testing of the device on the built materials along with reporting and analysis
10. Contribute to the wider technical programme as a small team requires - technical writing, submissions, external presentations and representing the company at ecosystem events
Required Skills
1. Demonstrated hands-on wet-lab capability- you have formulated, cast, cured or otherwise physically made things, and diagnosed them when they failed
2. Ability to reproduce a published method in lab and account for why your result diverged
3. Strong written English. This is assessed at application stage.
4. Quantitative comfort: replicates, variance, error propagation, and telling a result from an artefact
5. Self-direction and motivation
6. Creativity and narrative development for report representation and showcasing
Additional / Nice-to-Have Skills
1. Work with hydrogels, gelatin or agar systems, polymer composites, elastomers, or tissue-mimicking materials
2. Exposure to ISO 13485, ISO 14971, design controls or any regulated documentation environment
3. Design of experiments; Python, R or MATLAB
4. Prior contribution to research studies
5. Experience in an early-stage venture, a self-funded lab or a self-developed project that was brought to fruition
Educational qualifications
B.Sc, M.Sc., B.Tech, M.Tech, in biotechnology, microbiology, biomedical engineering, materials science, polymer science, biophysics or a closely related field
