Project: “Mechanism of Survival of Mycobacterium leprae in Natural Environments and its Transmission within Leprosy Endemic Area"

📍 Location: New Delhi (with field visits to Purulia, West Bengal)

Essential Qualifications
Educational Requirements
- Master’s degree (M.Sc./M.Tech) in Life Sciences, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, or related disciplines
Experience
- 2–3 years of hands-on research experience in:
- Molecular biology (PCR, qPCR/RT-PCR)
- Microbiology and/or cell culture techniques
- Experience in data management and analysis
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in leprosy, tuberculosis, or other mycobacterial/infectious diseases
- Exposure to environmental microbiology or One Health research approaches
- Familiarity with GIS mapping (QGIS/ArcGIS) and spatial data analysis
- Experience in scientific writing and publication
Key Responsibilities
- Perform molecular and microbiological assays (PCR, RT-PCR, DNA extraction, culture techniques)
- Process and analyse clinical and environmental samples (water, soil, etc.)
- Coordinate and participate in field visits for sample collection and surveillance
- Support GIS-based mapping and environmental data integration
- Maintain accurate data records, databases, and laboratory documentation
- Ensure compliance with biosafety, ethical guidelines, and quality standards
- Assist in data analysis, report writing, and manuscript preparation
- Contribute to project coordination and progress reporting

About the Project
We are recruiting for a research project on Mycobacterium leprae survival in environmental reservoirs and transmission dynamics in endemic areas using a One Health approach.
Reporting to: Principal Investigator-Dr Ravindra P. Turankar
Location: TLM Purulia, West Bengal
Name of Position: Field Research Assistant
Duration: Project-based (3 years)
Number of Positions: 2
Eligibility Criteria
ü Bachelor’s degree in any stream/ MLT / Arts / Commerce / Life Sciences
ü Minimum 1 year of experience in laboratory or field-based research
ü Experience in sample collection (clinical/environmental) preferred
ü Knowledge of GIS tools (QGIS), mobile data collection is desirable
Desirable Skills
- Experience in infectious diseases / NTDs / WASH studies
- Basic knowledge of computers
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
Key Responsibilities
- Field collection of water, soil, and clinical samples
- Sample labelling, transport, and documentation
- Support GIS-based mapping and environmental surveys
- Assist in laboratory processing and data recording
- Ensure biosafety and quality standards
Additional Requirements
- Willingness to travel to remote field sites
- Ability to work in community-based settings
