About the Role
The Release Manager / Release Train Engineer is a pivotal role at the intersection of technology and delivery excellence. You will orchestrate the end-to-end release lifecycle across one or more Agile Release Trains (ARTs), partnering with Engineering, QA, Product, and Project Management to plan and execute the release process and ship high-quality software products to our customers reliably and at scale. Beyond process management, you will be a cultural driver — fostering a mindset of continuous improvement, and cross-team ownership. The right candidate is as comfortable in a PI Planning session as well as in a post-mortem.
Responsibilities
Release Planning & Execution
- Own the end-to-end release process across all teams, aligning requirements, schedules, dependencies, and milestones.
- Facilitate PI planning events, iteration reviews, release notes and demos for a SAFe-based organization.
- Define and maintain release calendars, cutoff dates, and communication cadences for all stakeholders.
- Lead Go-Live readiness reviews and production deployment activities, including rollback planning.
- Manage release branching strategies and coordinate merges across complex multi-team code streams.
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Serve as the primary coordination point between Development, QA, DevOps, Product, Project Management and infrastructure teams.
- Identify, surface, and resolve cross-team dependencies and blockers before they impact delivery.
- Run Scrum-of-Scrums or ART Sync ceremonies to maintain visibility and momentum.
- Collaborate with Product Managers and Product Owners on scope, sequencing, and trade-off decisions.
Tooling, Automation & Quality Gates
- Design and evolve CI/CD pipelines and release automation strategies (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent).
- Establish and enforce quality gates — code coverage thresholds, automated regression suites, performance benchmarks — as mandatory release criteria.
- Drive shift-left testing practices in partnership with QA leads.
- Leverage cloud-native deployment capabilities (Azure) for zero-downtime, canary, or blue/green releases.
Observability, Risk & Incident Management
- Define release health metrics and dashboards (DORA: lead time, deployment frequency, MTTR, change failure rate).
- Own the release risk register; proactively identify and mitigate risks before they become incidents.
- Lead post-mortems after production incidents, ensuring learning loops close with actionable improvements.
- Coordinate communication plans for planned maintenance windows and unexpected outages.
Continuous Improvement & Culture
- Champion a culture of experimentation and iterative improvement.
- Regularly retrospect on release processes and drive measurable improvements in velocity, quality, and team satisfaction.
- Mentor junior team members and share knowledge through internal guilds or communities of practice.
- Stay current on industry trends (GitOps, platform engineering, AI-assisted testing) and advocate for adoption.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- 12+ years of experience in software engineering and 5+ years as a Release Manager, Release Train Engineer (RTE), or Delivery Manager in a software product environment.
- Strong grasp of the Software Development Lifecycle and modern release management practices.
- Hands-on experience with Agile methodologies — Scrum, Kanban, and/or SAFe (SAFe RTE certification is a strong plus).
- Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and tooling (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, ArgoCD, or similar).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Proficiency with version control workflows (Git branching strategies: GitFlow, trunk-based development).
- Experience managing release risk, dependency tracking, and stakeholder communication across multiple teams.
- Demonstrable ability to define and track metrics (e.g., DORA) or similar delivery KPIs.
Preferred Skills
- SAFe RTE or CSM/CSP certification.
- Experience with feature flags / progressive delivery tools.
- Exposure to observability stacks (Datadog).
- Knowledge of AI-assisted testing or code review tooling.
- Knowledge of Dual-track Agile frameworks.
