Description

General summary:  

Under minimal supervision performs the work of Biomedical Engineering, to repair and maintain medical equipment and radiographic/fluoroscopic equipment, including safety testing, and routine maintenance and repair. Assist with Implementation of departmental related departmental policies and procedures.

All RRH employees must perform their job responsibilities according to all RRH Hospital policies, as well as to accrediting organizations, federal and state regulation, and to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines, as applicable.


Requirements

Job Qualifications:

  1. An Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology or a related discipline or commensurate. Combination of education and experience, is required. OR
  2. A minimum of three years of technical experience, performing clinical or biomedical equipment installation, testing and repair on (all types of medical and related) instrumentation.
  3. Military Biomedical Technology/engineering training
  4. Knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics or biomedical engineering technology as applied to the calibration and repair of biomedical equipment and instrumentation is required. Knowledge of industry standards and regulations, such as, JCAHO, National Electrical Code, and OSHA/MOSH, regarding operation and maintenance of all types of medical equipment, and ability to apply such standards, is required.
  5. Ability to demonstrate use and maintenance or medical equipment for training purposes, and to perform calibration, repair and maintenance of medical equipment using specialized test equipment is required.
  6. Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use and operation all types of medical equipment used in clinical areas.
  7. Ability to direct, monitor, evaluate, train and motivate the performance of subordinate Biomedical Engineering junior technicians.
  8. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., to replace defective parts, approximately 20% of the time. Ability to push/pull equipment in order to install or remove same Approximately 20% of the time. Ability to stand and walk each approximately 50% of the time in the process of performing the responsibilities of the position.
  9. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to work with diverse levels of management and clinical staff, external vendors and to supervise employees.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  1. Assist in coordinating and supporting Biomedical Engineering Technicians assigned to the Clinical Engineering department. Works in conjunction with the director to develop work standards. Establishes and implements equipment testing procedures.
  2. Provides technical counsel to subordinate junior staff on codes, standards, maintenance and repair of all types of medical equipment.
  3. Consults with the senior technicians and director biomedical engineering department managers and medical staff regarding equipment operation and problems to obtain sufficient information to expiate the problem in order to minimize the amount of down-time.
  4. Ensures compliance with quality assurance measures which monitor the consistency and quality of services provided by the Biomedical Engineering Technicians. Monitors and enforces JCAHO accreditation standards for plant technology and safety management for patient and employee safety.
  5. Monitors timeliness of equipment inspections to ensure efficient staff responsiveness and reduce equipment down-time; Reviews potential safety hazards of equipment regularly, and documents actions taken to eliminate them; Performs regular checks of all medical equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation; Reviews and documents acceptance standards violations for newly purchased/rented/leased/loaned equipment under consideration for use at Reeves Regional Health.
  6. Helps to assist in new junior staff training and mentorship by providing on-going staff training and development.
  7. Contacts the various contracted medical equipment service suppliers to resolve problems with equipment operation, arrange for repair and replacement of parts. 
  8. Assures accurate and efficient maintenance of departmental records and reports, such as, Maintenance Requests, Electrical Safety forms, files and relevant departmental performance statistics in accordance with JCAHO, Federal, State and local regulations.
  9. Communicates information regarding high cost repairs to director, obtaining approval prior to initiating action.
  10. Maintains professional growth and development through participating in in-service training, external seminars, workshops, conferences, professional affiliations and related activities/events to keep abreast of developments in the biomedical engineering field.
  11. Performs related duties, as assigned.

Working Conditions

  1. On-call is required and overtime may be required.
  2. There is potential for exposure to ionizing radiation from x-ray generators, chemicals and chemical fumes from x-ray processors in the work environment, requiring observance of "Universal Precautions" by wearing protective clothing, such as, quilted gloves and lead aprons, and the observance of safe work practices.
