About the role

About the job

Red Hat Critical Accounts Program (CAP) team is hiring for a 6 months duration apprenticeship program and seeking a Trainee - Associate Software Maintenance Engineer (ASME) to join our newly formed Product Experience Engineering team. In this role, you will act as a bridge between product development and the product quality experienced by our customers.

Unlike traditional development roles focused on new feature architecture, this team is strictly focused on improving platform stability and product quality—specifically targeting complex areas like Cluster Lifecycle, Upgrades, and network migrations. As a trainee, you will apply a data-driven approach, leveraging intelligence from CEE.next and CAP Quality Insights to identify major customer pain points and create targeted test cases and code fixes for the engineering backlog. The Apprenticeship Program: This is a 6-month full-time program. You will have the unique opportunity to work with leading open-source developers, receiving hands-on mentorship and on-the-job training in Red Hat products like Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), OpenShift Container Platform, and Virtualization. Based on performance and evaluation, this position has the potential to convert into a full-time role at the end of the apprenticeship period.

What will you do?

  • Perform basic investigation and troubleshooting of OpenShift and Linux software issues based on general instructions, utilizing debugging tools to find resolutions.

  • Proactively write test cases and their corresponding code fixes for complex, real-world customer environments to help clear out the engineering backlog.

  • Utilize AI-augmented tooling (like Claude, Gemini, and Cursor) to accelerate test case creation, automate routine tasks, and ensure data consistency via prompt engineering.

  • Utilize standard open-source engineering workflows (Git, cherry-picking, rebasing) to submit fixes, ensuring code meets strict Engineering quality standards.

  • Gather information for bugs, propose fixes or workarounds, and collaborate with cross-functional global teams.

  • Build and maintain automated test suites and CI/CD pipelines to ensure product quality and implementation of clean, maintainable code.

What will you bring?

  • Recent Graduation (within the last two years: 2025/2026) with a bachelor's degree in engineering, technology (computer science or IT), science, or computer applications, or a master's degree in computer applications.

  • Familiarity with scripting (Bash or Python) and strong C/C++, Go, or Golang skills relevant to our product stacks.

  • Basic understanding of Linux fundamentals (Storage, Networking, etc.), Containers, open-source development.

  • Familiarity with Git workflows (GitLab/GitHub) and basic concepts of CI/CD pipelines.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-motivated mindset with the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, inclusive environment.

Good to have:

  • Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure) or containerization (Kubernetes, Docker).

  • Previous experience with data visualization tools, SQL, or debugging/observability tools.

  • Red Hat Certifications like RHCSA, RHCE, or OpenShift (DO188, DO280).

  • Open-source community contributions and a growth mindset centered on customer experience and innovation.
