Job Title: Quality Engineer - Mobile App Automation

Role Overview:
The Quality Engineer - Mobile App Automation is responsible for delivering high quality mobile application testing within Agile DevOps, product centric delivery teams. The role focuses on mobile automation across iOS and Android platforms, ensuring quality is embedded throughout the Software Development Lifecycle in line with Bupa Testing Practice, standards, and Quality Gate requirements.
The role works closely with Mobile App Developers, Architects, Product Owners, and other Quality Engineers to deliver functional, integration, end to end, regression, and non-functional testing for customer facing mobile applications.
This is a hands-on mobile app automation role, with strong emphasis on real device testing, CI/CD integration, and modern cloud-based test platforms.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
Quality Engineering Delivery:
- Act as an independent Quality Engineer within Agile DevOps, product centric delivery teams.
- Deliver mobile testing in line with approved Test Strategies and Test Plans, adhering to Bupa Testing Practice and delivery lifecycles (SDLC, ADLC, IDLC).
- Ensure testing activities provide appropriate Quality Gate evidence.
- Act as a quality custodian for mobile applications, ensuring defects, risks, and quality concerns are identified and addressed early.
Mobile App Automation & Shift Left Testing:
- Design, develop, and maintain automated mobile test packs for iOS and Android platforms.
- Build and enhance mobile automation frameworks using Appium and approved Bupa tooling.
- Execute mobile automated tests across real devices and emulators/simulators.
- Leverage device cloud platforms such as Browser Stack and Lambda Test (Test MU) to maximize coverage.
- Integrate mobile automation into CI/CD pipelines, enabling fast feedback.
- Support shift left testing, working closely with developers to improve mobile testability.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of mobile testing standards, frameworks, and tooling.
- Evaluate and adopt AI assisted testing capabilities where appropriate.
Test Design & Execution:
- Develop test specifications, test cases, scripts, and traceability matrices aligned to business requirements and user stories
Design mobile test scenarios covering:
- Functional user journeys.
- Device, OS, and network variations.
- Negative and edge cases.
- Usability and user experience.
- Maintain mobile app regression test packs and ensure they remain current.
- Identify, create, and manage test data for mobile test execution.
Execute and evaluate:
- Automated mobile tests.
- Manual mobile tests where required.
- Analyze test results and produce clear, accurate reports.
Risk, Defect & Quality Management:
- Identify mobile specific quality risks (device fragmentation, OS compatibility, network conditions).
- Log, track, and support resolution of defects using approved Bupa tools (e.g. Azure DevOps).
- Follow Bupa change management and defect management processes.
- Produce testing documentation, metrics, and quality reports.
- Participate in Post Implementation Reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work hand in hand with mobile app developers throughout the development lifecycle to ensure quality is built in
Participate actively in:
- Requirements and story analysis.
- Sprint planning.
- Daily stand ups.
- Reviews and retrospectives.
Review and provide quality input into:
- Business requirements.
- Functional specifications.
- User stories.
- Test strategies, results, and release notes.
- Support UAT and implementation phases, including OAT support where required.
- Share mobile app testing knowledge and best practices within the Quality Engineering Community.
Non-Functional & Accessibility Testing (Good to have):
Develop and execute nonfunctional testing in line with Bupa standards, including:
- Performance testing (mobile specific considerations)
- Accessibility testing (WCAG, mobile accessibility standards).
- Visual and usability testing.
Core Skills (Aligned to SFIA v8):
TEST - Functional Testing (Level 3):
- Designs and executes test cases and scripts mapped to defined acceptance criteria.
- Applies agreed standards for manual and automated mobile app testing.
- Automates testing tasks and increases coverage using mobile app frameworks.
- Analyses and reports on test results, issues, and risks.
BPTS - Acceptance Testing (Level 3):
- Designs and executes test scenarios against predefined acceptance criteria.
- Validates functional and non-functional mobile outcomes.
RELM - Release and Deployment (Level 3):
- Supports mobile app release planning and scheduling.
- Participates in mobile app release assurance and testing activities.
- Follows defined release and deployment processes.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong hands-on mobile app testing experience (iOS and Android)
- Proven experience with mobile automation using Appium
Experience using device cloud platforms:
- Browser Stack
- Lambda Test / Test MU
- Experience integrating mobile tests into CI/CD pipelines
- Understanding of mobile application architectures and APIs
- Experience working in Agile / DevOps product centric environments
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and collaboration skills
Good to Have:
- Accessibility testing experience (mobile accessibility standards)
- Exposure to Playwright for mobile web or hybrid apps
- API automation experience
- Experience with AI enabled testing tools
- Product model delivery experience
Qualifications & Professional Standards:
- ISTQB Foundation or Intermediate (preferred)
- Experience: typically, 2–7 years in Quality Engineering
- Minimum 2 years relevant mobile testing experience
Strong understanding of:
- Testing principles and techniques
- Delivery lifecycles (SDLC, ADLC, IDLC)
- Enterprise testing standards
