ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Quality & Design Engineer – Transformer Tank Fabrication
1. Design & Engineering
· Prepare and modify 2D fabrication drawings for transformer tanks, covers, flanges, supports, brackets, lifting arrangements, jacking pads and accessories using AutoCAD.
· Review customer drawings, specifications, BOMs and technical requirements before starting fabrication.
· Check drawings for dimensional accuracy, tolerances, welding details, material grades and fabrication feasibility.
· Develop fabrication drawings and shop-floor detailing based on customer-approved drawings.
· Coordinate with production and quality teams to resolve drawing-related issues and fabrication difficulties.
· Implement design modifications and engineering changes as per customer requirements.
· Support nesting and cutting plans for laser/plasma cutting to minimize material wastage.
· Verify critical dimensions and ensure design requirements are achievable during fabrication.
2. Quality Control & Assurance
· Monitor quality at all stages of transformer tank fabrication, including raw material inspection, cutting, bending, fit-up, welding, grinding, assembly, leak testing, blasting and painting.
· Prepare and maintain QAP, ITP, inspection formats, check sheets and quality records.
· Conduct dimensional inspection of tanks, covers, flanges, nozzles, brackets, supports, PCDs, grooves and other critical components.
· Verify welding quality, weld sizes, joint preparation, alignment and visual inspection requirements.
· Coordinate NDT activities such as LPT and ensure inspection results are properly documented.
· Monitor leak testing/pressure testing of transformer tanks and identify leakage or other defects.
· Ensure fabrication is carried out according to approved drawings, customer specifications and applicable standards.
· Carry out in-process and final inspection before dispatch.
3. NCR, RCA & CAPA
· Identify, document and control non-conformities during fabrication and inspection.
· Prepare NCR, 8D reports, CAPA and Why-Why analysis for customer and internal quality issues.
· Conduct root-cause analysis using tools such as Fishbone Diagram, 5 Why and FMEA.
· Implement corrective and preventive actions and monitor their effectiveness.
· Coordinate with production and engineering teams for timely closure of quality issues.
4. Production & Quality Coordination
· Coordinate with production, welding, cutting, bending, painting and assembly teams to maintain required quality standards.
· Provide technical clarification to shop-floor personnel regarding drawings and fabrication requirements.
· Monitor first-piece and critical-stage inspections.
· Support production planning by identifying potential quality and design issues before fabrication.
· Reduce rework, rejection and material wastage through effective process control.
5. Customer & Vendor Coordination
· Coordinate with customers for technical clarifications, drawing revisions, inspection requirements and quality concerns.
· Support customer inspections and address observations during inspection.
· Coordinate with suppliers regarding material certificates, dimensional requirements and quality issues.
· Verify incoming material against purchase specifications, drawings and required material grades.
6. Documentation & Quality Systems
· Maintain inspection reports, material test certificates, welding records, NDT reports, leak test reports and final inspection documents.
· Maintain traceability of raw materials and fabricated components.
· Prepare and maintain SOPs, work instructions, inspection checklists and process documentation.
· Support internal quality audits and customer audits.
· Ensure proper documentation and closure of quality records.
7. Continuous Improvement
· Identify recurring fabrication and quality problems and implement process improvements.
· Develop preventive measures to reduce welding defects, dimensional deviations, leakage and fit-up problems.
· Support implementation of FMEA and process-control measures for critical fabrication activities.
· Improve fabrication accuracy, productivity and overall product quality.

Preferred Candidate Profile & Selection Criteria
- Education: Diploma / BE / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering
- Experience: 3–5 years of relevant experience preferred; 5–8 years for a senior-level candidate.
- Industry Experience: Transformer tank fabrication preferred. Experience in sheet-metal, pressure vessel, heavy fabrication or structural fabrication is also relevant.
- Design & Drawing: Strong understanding of fabrication drawings, GA drawings, part and assembly drawings, dimensions, tolerances, GD&T and welding symbols.
- Design Software: AutoCAD mandatory. SolidWorks / Creo / CATIA preferred. Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word and PDF documentation.
- Transformer Tank Knowledge: Understanding of transformer tank construction, covers, flanges, radiators, conservators, nozzles, lifting lugs, jacking pads, valves and accessories.
- Fabrication Knowledge: Practical understanding of plate cutting, bending, rolling, fit-up, welding, grinding, blasting, painting and assembly.
- Sheet Metal & Material Knowledge: Knowledge of plate thickness selection, bend allowance, bend deduction, development, MS/CS plates, structural sections and transformer tank materials.
- Quality Inspection: Ability to conduct incoming, in-process and final inspections, including dimensional, visual, welding and leak/pressure testing.
- Welding & NDT: Good knowledge of MIG/MAG welding, welding defects, WPS/PQR and welder qualification. LPT Level-II preferred; knowledge of UT/RT/MPT is an advantage.
- Quality Documentation: Practical experience with QAP, ITP, inspection reports, NCR, 8D, CAPA, FMEA, RCA, Why-Why analysis and quality records.
- Inspection Instruments: Familiarity with vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, measuring tapes, welding gauges and other dimensional inspection instruments.
- Customer Drawings & Specifications: Ability to understand customer drawings, specifications and technical requirements and translate them into fabrication and inspection requirements.
- Design Changes & Problem Solving: Ability to handle drawing revisions, engineering changes, root-cause analysis and practical design/process modifications.
- Production Coordination: Ability to work closely with production, welding, cutting, bending, painting and assembly teams and resolve shop-floor technical and quality issues.
- Customer & Vendor Coordination: Comfortable handling customer inspections, technical clarifications, NCR closure, inspection requirements and supplier quality/material issues.
- Documentation & Traceability: Ability to maintain material certificates, welding records, NDT reports, leak-test reports, inspection reports and traceability records.
- Quality Systems: Basic knowledge of ISO 9001, welding standards and customer-specific requirements.
- Continuous Improvement: Ability to identify recurring fabrication issues and reduce rework, rejection, leakage, dimensional deviations, welding defects and material wastage.
- Personal Skills: Strong problem-solving, communication, coordination, attention to detail and ability to work independently as well as with production and quality teams.
Preferred Candidate Profile
A Mechanical Engineer with 3–5 years of hands-on experience in transformer tank or heavy fabrication, capable of independently handling AutoCAD drawings, fabrication detailing, dimensional inspection, welding quality, QAP/ITP, NCR/CAPA, customer requirements and shop-floor technical coordination. The ideal candidate should have a strong primary competency in either Design or Quality, while being capable of effectively supporting the other function.
Senior Candidate Profile
A candidate with 5–8 years of relevant experience, with strong transformer tank fabrication knowledge and the ability to independently handle customer drawings, 2D/3D design, BOM, fabrication drawings, production support, dimensional and welding inspection, quality documentation, customer inspections, root-cause analysis and NCR/CAPA closure.
CTC: ₹4–5.5 LPA, commensurate with experience, technical competency and relevant industry exposure.
