Puget Sound Energy is looking for a Fiber Optical Communication Technician to join our team. This is a union represented position responsible for the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic communication systems supporting PSE’s electric and gas operations as well as all corporate network systems. The Fiber Optical Communications Technician performs work essential to maintaining reliable communications throughout PSE’s service territory. The Fiber Optical Communications Technician constructs, installs, maintains, tests, and repairs fiber optic cables, systems, and associated equipment (Patch panels, termination panels, network devices). Preferred candidates would have extensive experience working with OTDR’s, light meters, fusion splicers, and specialized fiber tools on daily tasks. Candidate should be able to identify fiber cable types, core sizes, and their infrastructure application. Able to identify types of fiber optic connectors, patch cables, termination panels. Experience in infrastructure wiring and network wiring standards is desired. These duties include but not limited to placement/installation of buried, underground and aerial cables in all PSE environments.
This role supports fiber installation and maintenance activities that connect PSE substations, facilities, and operational sites throughout the service territory. These duties include but not limited to placement/installation of buried, underground and aerial cables. Technician’s are also required to do underground cable locating, using a range of locating techniques and devices.
Preferred candidates will have proven experience reading and interpreting blueprints network drawings, and documentation related to fiber optic work performed. Communication skills including coordinating work activities with other employees, supervisors, and departments is a necessity. The technician also performs similar and incidental duties as required, consistent with the scope of the classification and the collective bargaining agreement. As the Fiber Communications Technician will be working with PSE infrastructure, maintaining a strong safety-first mindset is critical at all times. This role involves working in environments where high-pressure natural gas lines and high-voltage electrical systems are present. Continuous situational awareness and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential to perform this job safely and effectively.
The position requires knowledge of various fiber optic communication systems, installation methods, and maintenance practices. The technician must be able to perform physical work that includes lifting, heavy pulling and rigging, climbing, working in confined spaces, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Technicians are required to use various manlifts, bucket trucks, and other light equipment. Technician must be knowledgeable and comfortable with towing trailers. Fiber team uses numerous types of trailers for fiber placement and splicing tasks. PSE environments will require a demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and teamwork is required. Must successfully complete Safety Training programs to work in power generation, distribution, and transmission facilities, as well as, high pressure natural gas infrastructure.
The technician must be able to work overtime, participate in on call rotations, and respond to emergency assignments as required by operational needs and the collective bargaining agreement. The ability to travel throughout PSE’s service territory on overnight jobs and projects as needed. Also may require work during days, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations. The employee is subject to standby and call out assignments in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Progression, bidding, assignments, wages, and working conditions are governed by the applicable union contract.
