Position Title:
Substitute District Nurse
Skills and Qualifications:
Current Washington License for Registered Nurse
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, ESA preferred
Current Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certification for Washington State preferred
Current CPR/First Aid (AED) Certification.
Reports To:
Assistant Superintendent
Major Tasks and Responsibilities:
Ability to assess and address the complex physical, mental, and social challenges facing schools
today
Conducts self in a professional manner with high ethical standards and appropriate behavior
regarding confidential information
Ability to understand, communicate and respect culturally diverse populations
Interest in nursing practice in an independent setting
Ability to use effective and appropriate communication with students, staff, and parents.
Strong collaboration skills
Ability, training, and experience to demonstrate sound decision-making skills
Ability to develop, oversee, and deliver portions of the health instructional program to students,
teachers, and parents
Ability to supervise other district employees regarding health care practices and procedures
Ability and desire to work with at-risk students and their families
Understanding of special education needs and processes
Ability to organize and coordinate the delivery of nursing services including required educational
regulations of school health
Ability to organize and supervise other health room staff in compliance with state laws and
regulations and district nursing protocols
Ability to organize and manage time to meet expected timelines regarding student screenings
Services Provided: The nursing process, specific to schools, requires the following activities
Health Assessment-
• Obtain health and developmental history for the student. Identify physical, social, and
behavioral health conditions that may affect the educational progress of the student
• Screen and evaluate the student for vision and hearing deficits, and immunization status,
as mandated by statute and regulations
• Assess the student referred by self, parents, or school staff for health concerns such as
self-care, nutrition, signs of substance use, and physical complaints
• Evaluate the effects of medication and health management procedures administered in
the school setting
Health Care Planning, Implementation and Evaluation-
• Maintain and evaluate cumulative health data to interpret the student’s health status to
parents, students and school staff
• Develop a nursing care plan with specific goals and nursing interventions to meet the
student’s needs, including physical, mental, emotional, social, cultural, and educational
needs. Evaluate and modify the nursing care plan at regular intervals
• Collaborate with other health care professionals or community agencies involved with the
care of the student.

• Consult with ESA certificated professionals and school staff regarding student health
factors
• Supervise the health service team, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses,
health room assistants, office staff, student assistants and nursing students
• Initiate referrals to parents, school staff and community health care providers
• Evaluate the follow-through and outcome of the referral. Encourage family involvement in
the school
• health care plan
Health Care Planning, Implementation and Evaluation-
• Teach health concepts to individuals referred to the school nurse, including but not limited
to self-care, wellness, dental hygiene, and control of communicable illness
• Teach health concepts in the classroom, including but not limited to family life and sexual
health, HIV/AIDS prevention education, substance abuse prevention education, stress
management and health consumer skills
• Assist in developing and evaluating health care curriculum in collaboration with district
committee
• Provide health counseling to students, staff and parents concerning chronic or acute
health care needs
• Provide crisis counseling for students with sudden illnesses, severe injuries, or emotional
needs, including possible physical or sexual abuse
• Provide counseling on adolescent issues, such as teen pregnancy, eating disorders and
sports fitness
Health Policy-
• Participate in developing procedures and policies for school safety, and disaster and
emergency preparedness
• Promote a positive, inclusive learning environment recognizing a multi-cultural population
which a variety of economic backgrounds, health beliefs and physical and intellectual
abilities
• Implement health policies with school staff
Additional Information: A school nurse is certificated in the state under the Education Staff Associate
standards which are governed by the Washington Administrative Code and is a licensed registered nurse
(R.N.) in accordance with the regulations of the State Board of Nursing.
