Position Title:
Elementary School Counselor
Skills and Qualifications:
Must possess or be eligible for Washington State certification with appropriate endorsement
Strong interpersonal relationship skills with effective counseling skills and with some classroom elementary
teaching experience preferred
Ability to communicate, collaborate and work well with parents, students and staff members
Successful experiences working with elementary age students preferred
Provide positive experiences and desire to work with students in a multi-cultural setting
Experience and/or knowledge of evidence-based intervention programs and community outreach programs
Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Reports To:
Building Principal
Major Tasks and Responsibilities:
New student orientation
Counseling of students in groups, pairs and individuals with academic, behavioral and social needs (divorce,
grandparents, grief, attendance, etc.)
Lead and supervise the implementation of behavioral and social/emotional interventions- Check-In and
Check-Out, Second Step, Character Strong
Assist in the coordination of mental health information and access for schools and families
Deep understanding and knowledge of crisis intervention, suicide prevention training, and threat assessment
Provide age appropriate guidance lessons on social emotional learning
504 Coordinator for the building (testing, development, and implementation of 504s)
Participate on the SST team, working closely with the Principal to identify student interventions and gather
additional information
Assist with the coordination of Benton Franklin Community outreach programs in the district
Teach required district Health, Personal Safety, Emotional Regulation, Social Skills and Bullying lessons
weekly/daily
Meet with parents requesting additional support for students
Identify and work closely with Boys and Girls Club for students of need
Confer and collaborate with other elementary counselors in the district
Organize, develop, and implement programs that raise students’ awareness and status within the building.
Lead and support the implementation and continued use of PAX and PBIS
Awareness of district and state guidelines around CPS reporting
Establish and maintain cooperative professional relationships with students, staff and community.
Perform other duties as assigned.
