Project Title: iSURG-MR: An Intelligent Surgical Guidance using Mixed Reality system for Surgical Training and Decision Support
Project Overview
The iSURG-MR project aims to develop a clinically validated, high-fidelity Mixed Reality (MR) simulation ecosystem and dynamic digital twin framework for intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) guided neurosurgery and other surgical applications. This Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6) platform is being developed to translate advanced human-in-the-loop simulations into real-world applications, bridging training gaps across Indian medical institutions.
Position Details
- Position: Project Associate / Junior Research Fellow (JRF) / Project Staff
- Number of Positions: 01
- Duration: Atleast 1 year (Extendable based on performance and project duration)
- Job Location: Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (SMART XR Lab)
- Salary/Stipend: As per ANRF / IRCC IIT Bombay
Job Responsibilities
The selected candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) to build the core architecture of the iSURG-MR ecosystem. Key responsibilities include:
1. Mixed Reality & Simulation Development
- Develop a high-fidelity, photorealistic MR simulation backbone using major game engines (Unity 3D / Unreal Engine) integrated with modern VR/MR headsets (HTC Vive Pro, Meta Quest).
2. Hardware-Software Integration & Prototyping
- Develop sensor fusion and MR-space registration algorithms for the real-time mapping of probe orientation and applied force.
- Design and 3D-print (using FDM printers) custom-tracked procedural tools and physical surrogates to achieve tactile/haptic realism.
3. Learning Analytics Engine (Mathematical Modeling)

Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- M.E. / M.Tech. / M.S. (or B.E. / B.Tech with exceptional performance) in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Production/Industrial Engineering, Virtual/Augmented Reality, or related interdisciplinary fields.
- Strong programming proficiency in Python, C# or C++ for game engines (Unity/Unreal).
- Prior experience working with VR/MR hardware (Meta Quest, HTC Vive) and sensor hardware integration.
Desirable Skills / Experience
- Experience with 3D modeling/slicing software and FDM 3D printing workflows.
- Familiarity with physics engines or open-source medical simulation frameworks (e.g., SOFA framework).
- Basic understanding of machine learning/reinforcement learning algorithms and stochastic mathematical modeling (Markov chains, Bayesian statistics).
