Job Title: Product Industrialization Engineer – Plastics
Job Description
The Product Industrialization Engineer – Plastics is responsible for supporting the industrialization and launch of new products at suppliers, with a focus on injection molding, thermoplastic materials, and related manufacturing processes. This role combines hands-on technical expertise in plastics materials, tooling, and process engineering with strong collaboration across Engineering, Procurement, Quality, and Operations teams to ensure robust manufacturing processes, cost competitiveness, and scalable production readiness. The engineer will work closely with suppliers to develop, validate, and continuously improve manufacturing processes while ensuring alignment with product design intent and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Support industrialization of new plastic components and assemblies at suppliers, ensuring readiness for production scale-up.
- Partner with suppliers to develop and validate injection molding processes, including tooling qualification, process capability, and control plans.
- Execute APQP, PPAP, and product/process validation activities for new product launches.
- Identify and mitigate technical risks during product development and launch phases.
- Support supplier selection by evaluating technical capabilities in plastics manufacturing and tooling.
- Provide technical expertise in injection molding processes, tooling design, and thermoplastic materials.
- Support development and optimization of molding processes (e.g., cycle time, shrinkage, warpage, cosmetic quality).
- Evaluate and recommend materials, including engineered thermoplastics and composites, based on performance and manufacturability requirements.
- Collaborate on compounding strategies, resin selection, and material qualification.
- Troubleshoot process and tooling issues, including mold flow, defects, and variability.
- Partner with Product Engineering to ensure designs are optimized for injection molding and high-volume manufacturing.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis and support GD&T interpretation and application.
- Review and influence tool design, gating strategies, cooling systems, and part geometry.
- Participate in design reviews and provide feasibility assessments.
- Drive alignment between design intent and supplier manufacturing capabilities.
- Work closely with suppliers to improve process capability, tooling performance, and production efficiency.
- Conduct supplier visits and audits focused on plastics manufacturing processes and quality systems.
- Support supplier capability development through training and technical guidance.
- Collaborate with global cross-functional teams to ensure consistent industrialization execution.
- Ensure robust quality planning and deployment during industrialization phases.
- Support resolution of major supplier-related quality or process issues during launch.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action implementation for systemic issues.
- Monitor key industrialization metrics and communicate status to leadership.
- Collaborate with Engineering, Procurement, and Quality teams across regions to ensure successful product launches.
- Travel to supplier sites as required (20–40%).
Essential Skills
- 5–10 years of experience in plastics engineering, manufacturing engineering, or supplier industrialization.
- Hands-on experience with injection molding processes and tooling design.
- Experience supporting new product development (NPD/NPI) and product launches.
- Experience working with suppliers in a manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering, Materials Science, or related field required.
- Strong English communication skills (verbal and written - technical).
- Strong knowledge of injection molding processes, tooling design, and mold familiarity with thermoplastics, thermoplastic composites, and compounding processes.
- Understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and dimensional control.
- Proficiency in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for plastic components.
- Familiarity with mold flow analysis and process simulation tools (preferred).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with experience in statistical methods (SPC, DOE, capability analysis).
- Ability to troubleshoot complex manufacturing and process issues.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills across cross-functional and supplier teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, global environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong technical documentation and reporting skills.
- Self-motivated and results-driven with a continuous improvement mindset.
