Manager – New Product Development (NPD)
Rubber Components & Moulded Products | Reports to: COO
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced New Product Development Manager to lead our NPD function from customer enquiry through to first-time-right production. The development cycle begins with a customer drawing or sample, and you will own the full lifecycle — feasibility, costing, mould design, process selection, sampling, and validation.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to a rubber industry professional with strong technical depth across moulding processes, mould design, and product costing. Experience in setting up or running an in-house mould making facility would be a strong added advantage, though not essential.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Delivery
- Take ownership of each NPD from receipt of customer drawing or sample through to first-time-right production.
- Prepare a monthly NPD plan with committed dates, approved by the COO, and deliver against it.
- Achieve 100% First Time Right (FTR) on all new developments; raise CAPA where FTR is missed and embed learnings to prevent recurrence.
- Issue quotations within 24 hours of enquiry and deliver first samples within two weeks.
Product & Process Engineering
- Evaluate each new product and select the most suitable manufacturing process — compression, injection, transfer moulding, or extrusion.
- Decide make-versus-buy for each part based on capability, cost, and capacity.
- Prepare internal drawings for all parts using AutoCAD.
- Ensure all new compounds are correctly coded with a separate specification sheet for each.
Mould Design & Tooling
- Design moulds either in-house or through external sources, based on project needs.
- Coordinate closely with mould makers to ensure on-time delivery of moulds.
- Prepare ROI cases for tooling and mould-shop investments to support capex decisions.
- Support the future setup of an in-house mould making facility if and when the business decides to invest in one (nice to have).
Costing & Quotations
- Prepare cost sheets for all new enquiries after confirming technical feasibility.
- Build process-based costing and submit quotations to the customer.
- Prepare ROI justifications when new machinery or equipment is required for a project.
Lab, Documentation & Compliance
- • Ensure all lab equipment and gauges are calibrated and fit for purpose; plan replacements or additions with supporting ROI.
- • Maintain complete records of all NPD activities including samples, mould drawings, material details, and mould-making charges.
- • Prepare Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures for any new or changed workflow specific to a project.
Key Performance Indicators
- NPDs delivered on time, as per the approved monthly plan.
- Quotation turnaround: within 24 hours of enquiry.
- First sample delivery: within two weeks.
- First Time Right: 100%.
Skills & Capabilities Required
- Technical
- Strong rubber process knowledge — ability to select the right process for the right part.
- Hands-on experience with compression moulding, injection moulding, transfer moulding, and extrusion.
- Mould design expertise and proficiency in AutoCAD for mould and product drawings.
- Experience setting up or running a mould making facility is a nice to have.
- Sound knowledge of rubber physical-properties testing.
- Processq-based product costing and ROI evaluation for capex.
Leadership & Behavioural
- Proven leadership and team-working ability.
- Strong planning discipline and accountability for delivery.
- Clear communicator — comfortable working with customers, mould makers, and cross-functional teams.
