The Observability Architect will define and drive LPL’s enterprise observability architecture, ensuring end‑to‑end visibility, actionable insights, and proactive detection across applications, platforms, and infrastructure. This role establishes the architectural vision, standards, and reference patterns for observability—spanning metrics, traces, logs, RUM/UI visibility, routing, enrichment, and retention.
In addition, the architect will advance reliability practices including E2E observability, partnering closely with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Platform Architecture, and product engineering teams to improve availability, performance, and incident response outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Vision
- Develop and maintain a multi‑year observability architecture roadmap aligned with enterprise modernization initiatives.
- Define the target state for observability platforms, data pipelines, and telemetry strategy.
- Align observability and reliability insights with business outcomes, performance requirements, and operational KPIs.
- Establish a unified architectural vision for cross-domain observability, automation, and intelligent insights (AIOps).
Architecture and Platform Design
- Design end‑to‑end observability architecture across: UI, RUM, metrics, traces, logs, enrichment, routing, and retention.
- Build scalable, resilient ingestion and telemetry pipelines (OpenTelemetry-forward) across distributed systems.
- Define architectural patterns enabling cross‑platform correlation and unified visibility.
- Ensure platform designs optimize for cost efficiency, performance, and operational readiness.
- Drive architectural guidance for incident detection, alert correlation, business‑journey health, and SLO-driven monitoring.
Standards and Guidelines
- Create comprehensive observability standards and patterns by platform, tech stack, and integration type.
- Define telemetry quality frameworks, cardinality expectations, data governance, PII handling, and access controls.
- Establish standards for SLO/SLI definitions, alerting best practices, and error-budget-driven improvement.
- Partner with SRE to review major incidents, identify observability gaps, and evolve architecture and tooling.
Developer and SRE Enablement
- Provide guidance and reusable assets (templates, SDKs, reliability/observability-as-code patterns).
- Enable frictionless onboarding and self-service integrations into telemetry pipelines and dashboards.
- Coach engineering teams on instrumentation, traceability, event modeling, and dependency mapping.
Enterprise Initiatives
- Define observability and reliability approaches for major initiatives, including data center migrations, cloud modernization, platform consolidation, and M&A/partner integrations.
- Ensure observability is embedded into the lifecycle of new platforms, services, and business capabilities.
Skills & Experience
- Expertise in distributed systems and microservices architectures.
- Strong hands-on knowledge of observability tooling and ecosystem (OpenTelemetry, Dynatrace, ELK, Datadog, Grafana, Splunk, etc.).
- Proficiency in designing logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting pipelines.
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes, service meshes, and cloud platforms (AWS required; Azure preferred).
- Familiarity with SRE principles, reliability patterns, AIOps, and event correlation strategies.
- Experience defining enterprise-level telemetry and resilience standards.
- Exceptional cross-team collaboration, communication, and architectural storytelling.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or related field preferred.
- Relevant certifications in cloud architecture, observability, SRE, or DevOps practices are a plus.
