Job Description
The role involves providing technical leadership for railway track design projects in New Zealand to ensure client satisfaction. Key responsibilities include conducting leading track design activities, supporting the New Zealand Transport Infrastructure Team, mentoring junior team members, and reviewing their work for quality. Provide expert advice on rail alignment and track design, ensuring compliance with business development and project delivery standards.
Responsibilities
- To provide support in the production of track design proposals, as required.
- To supervise and direct track design projects and assist in the professional and technical development of junior members of staff.
- Coordinate the production and timely delivery of track alignment designs from a range of clients.
- Undertake the design of horizontal and vertical track alignments, track structure and track form incorporating the appropriate components.
- Write track design specifications and alignment criteria.
- Undertake track design checking, peer review technical reports and be able to provide structured, positive feedback.
- Attend inter-disciplinary design reviews and undertake inter-disciplinary design checks.
- Provide support to and participate in client advisory roles.
- Participate in feasibility studies and investigative studies.
- Assist in the preparation of tenders, bids and pre-qualification questionnaires, providing methodology, resource estimates and input to programmes.
- Undertake the role of Track Design Team Leader on projects as required.
- Supervise and direct junior team members.
- Develop towards chartership and gaining accreditation with local agencies and transport operators such as ARTC, MTM, RPEQ etc.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing in internal and external forums.
Key Competencies / Skills:
Mandatory Skills
- Horizontal and vertical alignment design and reporting. Different modes (Light rail to freight) and different design stages (concept through to detail).
- Turnout design – both simple and complex design solutions.
- Clearance assessments, both for greenfield and brownfield and to understand the build-up of the kinematic profile.
- Strong communication skills using written and verbal English.
- Experience of designing, checking and verifying track design for Australian clients.
- Experience in interdisciplinary coordination.
- Remain up to date with market and competitor knowledge.
- An understanding of track componentry and track fixing types.
- Awareness of maintenance principles.
- Establish and maintain working relationships.
- Able to plan own work to meet project timescales and budgets.
- Able to communicate effectively with managers and other engineers in all disciplines.
Software Competencies
- Very good working knowledge of Bentley Open Rail Designer (from alignment design through to preparation of drawings).
- Should have working knowledge of Microstation / AutoCAD.
- Conversant with the MS office.
- Working knowledge of ClearRoute software or similar for gauging clearance assessment.
- Working Knowledge of ProjectWise or Similar software for handling of designs.
Desired Skills
- Preferable to have working experience of OpenRoads, Ground Modelling and Highways Design.

- To provide high quality consultancy services to WSP’s clients and meet the applicable utilisation targets as determined by WSP to support and drive the ongoing success and growth of the organisation.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or post graduate degree in Civil Engineering with 10-15 years postgraduate experience with a consultancy or developer.
- Working towards, or willing to work towards, Chartership.
- At least 7 years’ experience of working with Rail Alignment & Track Design for LRT, Metro, Monorail, HighSpeed and/or Freight railways and other Guided Transport Systems.
