About the Role
We’re looking for a Principal Engineer / Head of FMS Engineering to take senior technical ownership of our Fleet Management System (FMS) — the platform orchestrating our AMR/AGV fleet (forklifts, pallet jacks, reach trucks, shelf-moving robots) across customer sites in India and the USA. This is a full-time, in-office role based out of our Pune office.
You’ll operate as the primary technical deputy to the AVP of Technology — owning architecture decisions, driving the FMS platform roadmap, leading a team of developers, and acting as the final technical escalation point for critical production issues. This role is expected to be capable of stepping in for the VP of Technology on technical matters when required.
Key Responsibilities
• Platform Ownership: Own the end-to-end architecture of the FMS platform — task allocation, routing, traffic management, multi-robot coordination, and third-party integrations.
• Technical Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of FMS developers; set engineering standards, review architecture and code, and drive technical decision-making across the team.
• Development: Remain hands-on — build and review core backend services (NestJS/Node.js), real-time messaging pipelines (MQTT/EMQX), and operator-facing dashboards (React) where needed.
• Integrations: Oversee integration of the FMS with WMS/ERP, PLCs, conveyors, lifts, and vision/scanning systems, using REST, MQTT, and AGV protocols such as VDA5050.
• High Availability & Infrastructure: Own HA architecture decisions — PostgreSQL replication/failover, Keepalived-based virtual IP failover — to meet uptime commitments across customer deployments.
• Production Ownership: Be the final escalation point for critical production incidents across customer sites, coordinating with field and support teams to drive resolution.
• Roadmap & Strategy: Work with the VP of Technology to define the FMS product roadmap, evaluate platform and architecture decisions, and plan major re-architecture initiatives.
• Deployment Oversight: Support planning and technical oversight for new site deployments, UAT, and go-lives, including coordination with field engineering teams as needed.
• Documentation & Process: Establish and maintain architecture documentation, engineering processes, and runbooks across the team.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with robotics/controls engineering, QA, field engineering, and customer-facing teams to align technical execution with business priorities.
Required Skills & Qualifications
• 10–15 years of professional software development experience, including significant time in a technical leadership or platform-ownership role.
• Must have worked at a robotics/warehouse automation company on the FMS (Fleet Management System) software itself — not adjacent hardware, PLC, or mechanical automation roles. Direct experience building or owning software that orchestrates AMR/AGV fleets (task allocation, routing, traffic management, robot communication) is required.
• Deep proficiency in Node.js / NestJS and TypeScript/JavaScript, with a track record of architecting production backend systems.
• Working proficiency in Java, including comfort reading, modifying, and extending existing Java-based codebases.
• Strong expertise in PostgreSQL — schema design, performance tuning, replication, and high-availability architecture.
• Hands-on experience with MQTT (EMQX or similar broker) or comparable real-time/pub-sub messaging systems at production scale.
• Strong REST API design experience and proven track record integrating with enterprise systems (WMS/ERP, PLCs, or similar).
• Proficiency in React for building and reviewing operational dashboards.
• Demonstrated experience owning Linux server environments, networking, and production infrastructure (on-prem and/or cloud).
• Strong track record leading engineering teams — hiring, mentoring, code/architecture review, and setting technical direction.
• Proven ability to debug and resolve complex, distributed production issues under pressure.
• Willingness to work full-time, in-office in Pune.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
• Hands-on experience with VDA5050, Open-RMF, or a comparable AMR/AGV orchestration protocol/platform.
• Experience designing high-availability infrastructure end-to-end (Keepalived, automatic bidirectional failover, replicated databases).
• Familiarity with Docker and containerized deployment pipelines.
• Background in warehouse automation, robotics, logistics tech, or IoT.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git-based workflows at team/org scale.
• Prior experience as a senior technical point of contact for enterprise customers, including occasional customer-facing technical discussions.
• Experience managing or mentoring a team of 3+ engineers.
