Role Purpose
The Senior / Principal Automotive Systems Engineer – Networks, Features & Diagnostics defines, specifies, and integrates in-vehicle networking, feature behaviour, and diagnostics for the BSUV platform. The role owns system requirements through feature/ECU/software requirements, develops CAN/LIN/Ethernet and UDS diagnostic concepts, and ensures integration readiness across Systems, Software, Integration, Validation, and Suppliers.
Acts as the technical focal point to keep requirements, interfaces, and implementation aligned through programme milestones.
Key Responsibilities
Requirements Engineering
- Lead capture and clarification of system requirements for networking, features, and diagnostics.
- Decompose into clear, testable feature/ECU/software requirements with acceptance criteria.
- Maintain baselines, assumptions/constraints, and bidirectional traceability to verification.
- Manage requirement changes with impact analysis and stakeholder alignment.
In-Vehicle Network Engineering (CAN / LIN / Automotive Ethernet)
- Define and maintain the in-vehicle network architecture (topology, ECU connectivity, gateways).
- Specify CAN/LIN/Ethernet communication concepts (signals/PDUs/messages, routing, network management).
- Create and maintain network databases (DBC, LDF, ARXML) with consistent definitions.
- Analyse bus load, timing/latency, and robustness; support issue resolution during integration.
Feature Specification Ownership
- Own feature specifications for assigned body/vehicle functions.
- Define behaviour (state machines), interfaces, dependencies, and timing/performance targets.
- Define degraded modes, failure handling, and recovery; align with comms and diagnostics.
- Define calibration/configuration parameters and variant handling; lead spec reviews and releases.
Diagnostics (UDS-Based)
- Own the UDS diagnostic concept for assigned ECUs/domain controllers.
- Specify DTC strategy, detection/debouncing/healing, and alignment to feature failure modes.
- Define DIDs, routines, sessions, and security access; create tester use cases (dev/production/service).
- Support validation and root cause analysis with diagnostic expertise.
Key Deliverables
- System/feature/ECU requirements with traceability.
- In-vehicle network architecture documentation.
- Network databases and comms definitions (DBC/LDF/ARXML).
- Feature specifications (behaviour, interfaces, failure handling).
- Diagnostic specifications (DTCs, DIDs, routines).
- Integration readiness inputs, issue/root-cause reports, and V&V support Interfaces and Collaboration
- Work with Systems Engineering on requirements and architecture alignment.
- Coordinate with Software Engineering on ECU/software implementation and interfaces.
- Support Vehicle Integration for network bring-up, feature validation, and issue resolution.
- Partner with Validation/Test teams for verification inputs and diagnostic coverage.
- Manage suppliers for spec handover, reviews, and technical issue closure.
- Provide programme readiness and technical risk updates to programme management.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet.
- Requirements engineering and traceability management.
- UDS diagnostics (DTCs, DIDs, routines, sessions/security access).
- Clear technical specification writing and review facilitation.
- Supplier technical management and cross-functional communication.
