Job Purpose
The Principal of the Law Department shall provide academic, administrative, and strategic leadership to ensure excellence in legal education, research, innovation, student development, and institutional growth in accordance with the regulations of the Bar Council of India (BCI), UGC guidelines, and university policies.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Leadership
- Provide visionary leadership for undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral law programs.
- Ensure compliance with BCI, UGC, and other statutory requirements governing legal education.
- Develop and implement academic policies, curriculum enhancements, and innovative teaching methodologies.
- Promote interdisciplinary legal education, clinical legal education, and experiential learning initiatives.
- Monitor academic quality, student performance, and learning outcomes.
Administrative Management
- Oversee the day-to-day administration and functioning of the law department.
- Manage faculty workload, timetables, academic calendars, examinations, and departmental resources.
- Prepare departmental budgets and ensure effective utilization of financial resources.
- Maintain institutional records, reports, and documentation required by regulatory bodies.
- Coordinate with university authorities on academic and administrative matters.
Faculty Development
- Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty members in accordance with university policies.
- Encourage faculty participation in research, publications, conferences, and professional development programs.
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance academic culture.
- Support faculty in obtaining research grants, consultancy projects, and industry collaborations.
Research and Innovation
- Promote quality legal research, publications, patents, and scholarly activities.
- Establish research centres, legal aid clinics, and specialized academic initiatives.
- Encourage interdisciplinary and policy-oriented research addressing contemporary legal issues.
- Develop collaborations with legal institutions, courts, law firms, and government agencies.
Student Development
- Ensure effective student mentoring, counselling, and academic support systems.
- Promote participation in moot courts, legal aid activities, internships, debates, and national/international competitions.
- Address student grievances and maintain a positive learning environment.
- Facilitate placement opportunities and career development initiatives.
Accreditation and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with BCI, UGC, NAAC, NIRF, and other accreditation requirements.
- Lead departmental preparation for accreditation, ranking, and quality assurance processes.
- Develop and implement continuous improvement strategies based on quality benchmarks.
- Maintain statutory records and documentation for inspections and audits.
Industry and Institutional Relations
- Build partnerships with courts, law firms, corporate legal departments, NGOs, and governmental organizations.
- Facilitate internships, placements, guest lectures, and collaborative programs.
- Represent the department in academic, professional, and community forums.
- Promote legal awareness and community engagement through extension activities.
Qualification and Experience
- Ph.D. in Law from a recognized university.
- Master's Degree in Law (LL.M.) with an excellent academic record.
- Minimum qualifications and experience as prescribed by UGC and Bar Council of India norms for the position.
- Significant teaching, research, and administrative experience in higher education institutions.
- Demonstrated leadership in academic administration, accreditation, and institutional development.
