About This Role
Prince William County Government offers career opportunities in various Maintenance & Operations and Trades positions to support the upkeep, repair, and safe operation of County facilities, equipment, and grounds. This position is part of the Maintenance & Operations Job Family, which performs hands-on maintenance work, operates tools and machinery, conducts inspections, and ensures compliance with safety standards across County departments.
Technicians in this series play a critical role in maintaining County infrastructure, supporting daily operations, and ensuring that public spaces and facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may vary by assignment and classification level but typically include:
General Maintenance & Repair
- Performing routine maintenance and repairs on County buildings, equipment, and systems.
- Troubleshooting issues involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical systems.
- Selecting and using appropriate tools, equipment, and materials for assigned tasks.
Equipment Operation & Inspection
- Operating and maintaining tools, vehicles, and specialized equipment.
- Conducting inspections to ensure safe operating conditions and identifying repair needs.
- Performing preventive maintenance and cleaning on assigned equipment.
Grounds & Facility Support
- Maintaining County grounds, including mowing, landscaping, and debris removal.
- Supporting facility operations such as minor carpentry, painting, or structural repairs.
Safety & Compliance
- Following all safety procedures, codes, and regulations.
- Identifying hazards and ensuring safe work practices.
- Maintaining accurate logs, records, and maintenance documentation.
Operational Support
- Responding to service requests and prioritizing maintenance needs.
- Monitoring inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment and reporting replenishment needs.
Minimum Qualifications – varies by position- Education
- Experience range
- Knowledge of standard maintenance practices, tools, and materials.
- Ability to operate and maintain equipment safely and effectively.
- Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or HVAC systems.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain records and follow safety regulations.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in facility, equipment, or grounds maintenance.
- Experience performing inspections or preventive maintenance.
- Familiarity with safety codes, building systems, or maintenance software.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Certifications in trades (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) are a plus.
Work Environment
This position involves physical work, including lifting, climbing, operating equipment, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Some roles may require shift work, on-call availability, or work in secure facilities such as detention centers.
