About the Department
Prince William County Government offer career opportunities for motivated and technically skilled Engineers to support planning, design, review, and implementation of public infrastructure and development projects.
This position is part of the County’s Engineer job family, which provides professional engineering expertise in areas such as transportation, land development, stormwater management, environmental engineering, utilities, and capital project delivery.
Engineers in this series ensure that County projects and private development activities meet applicable codes, standards, and best practices while supporting safe, sustainable, and well-planned growth.
Responsibilities
Depending on assignment and classification level, duties may include:
Engineering Review & Analysis
- Reviewing engineering plans, site development submissions, plats, and technical reports for compliance with County, state, and federal standards.
- Conducting engineering analyses related to stormwater, traffic, utilities, grading, erosion and sediment control, or environmental impacts.
- Preparing technical comments, recommendations, and conditions of approval.
Project Management & Design
- Assisting with planning, design, and delivery of County capital improvement projects.
- Coordinating with consultants, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout project phases.
- Preparing engineering drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and project schedules.
Field & Compliance Activities
- Conducting site inspections to verify compliance with approved plans, permits, and engineering standards.
- Investigating citizen concerns, drainage issues, or infrastructure deficiencies and recommending corrective actions.
- Supporting enforcement of applicable codes, ordinances, and environmental regulations.
Technical Support & Collaboration
- Providing engineering guidance to County staff, developers, and the public.
- Participating in interdepartmental teams, public meetings, and stakeholder discussions.
- Maintaining accurate records, reports, and project documentation.
Qualifications
Successful candidates typically demonstrate:
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, design standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, technical documents, and specifications.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Proficiency with engineering software, GIS, CAD, or modeling tools (depending on assignment).
- Education and experience requirements vary by classification level within the Engineer series.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in municipal or public-sector engineering.
- Familiarity with Virginia codes, VDOT standards, stormwater regulations, or land development processes.
- Experience with hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, traffic analysis, or utility design.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
Work Environment
This position involves a combination of office and field work. Fieldwork may include exposure to construction sites, varying weather conditions, and physical activity such as walking uneven terrain.
