ABOUT VISOTONICS
Visotonics builds industrial computer-vision and Vision-AI systems for the logistics and maritime sectors — including container damage detection, optical character recognition, vehicle recognition, and document processing — deployed at ports, container freight stations, and terminals. As our systems move deeper into the field, the positioning, optical, and hardware layer they physically depend on becomes a core engineering discipline of its own. This role owns that layer.
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are hiring a full-time specialist consultant to architect, specify, and de-risk the entire physical hardware layer of Visotonics' deployed systems. This spans precision positioning — anchored by our crane-mounted RTK GNSS and sensor-fusion system for container-yard placement tracking — the camera and optical setup our vision and AI pipelines rely on, and the embedded, edge-compute, and IoT connectivity that ties field installations together. The role bridges Visotonics' computer-vision and AI strength with the hardware and positioning engineering those products run on, working end-to-end from system architecture through on-site commissioning.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Positioning & GNSS/RTK
• Architect and specify RTK GNSS positioning systems — receiver, base-station, and antenna selection, and the RTK correction strategy.
• Advise on GNSS performance in challenging, multipath-heavy environments such as metal-dense container yards.
• Design GNSS, IMU, and crane-encoder sensor-fusion architecture and guide the estimation and EKF approach.
• Lead industrial-protocol integration, including CAN, CANopen, and J1939 interfacing with crane PLCs.
Camera & Vision Hardware
• Optimise camera placement and optical design — selecting industrial cameras and lenses and setting mounting positions, angles, working distance, and field of view to guarantee resolution-on-target.
• Design multi-camera layouts for gates, crane spreaders, and yard inspection portals that eliminate blind spots while controlling camera count and cost.
• Design illumination that controls glare and shadow on reflective metal surfaces and performs reliably across day, night, and weather conditions.
• Specify camera calibration, synchronisation, and rugged enclosures, ensuring placement decisions support the computer-vision and AI pipelines.
Embedded, Edge & IoT
• Specify embedded hardware and edge-compute units for rugged, outdoor field deployment.
• Architect the IoT layer — connectivity selection (4G/LTE/5G, LoRa, Wi-Fi, wired), telemetry, and edge-to-cloud data flow.
• Plan remote monitoring, over-the-air updates, and provisioning for fleets of deployed field units.
• Address power, environmental sealing, and ruggedisation for harsh industrial installations.
Cross-cutting Delivery
• Evaluate vendors, build bills of materials, and guide procurement and cost optimisation.
• Support prototyping, field testing, calibration, and on-site commissioning.
• Produce design documentation, test plans, and technical specifications.
• Mentor and transfer knowledge to Visotonics' in-house engineering team.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
• Strong hands-on experience with GNSS/RTK positioning — receivers (u-blox, Septentrio, Unicore), correction services, and a thorough understanding of GNSS error sources.
• Machine-vision optics expertise — industrial cameras, lens and sensor selection, illumination design, camera calibration, and multi-camera geometry.
• A solid embedded-systems and hardware-engineering background — electronics, sensors, single-board computers, and industrial-grade design.
• Working knowledge of sensor fusion, Kalman filtering, and inertial navigation.
• Experience with IoT systems — connectivity, telemetry, edge-to-cloud architecture, and remote device management.
• Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (CAN, Modbus, serial).
• A proven track record of deploying hardware in harsh outdoor or industrial environments.
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, Robotics, or a related engineering discipline.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in ports, logistics, maritime, or heavy-machinery automation.
• Exposure to surveying or geodesy.
• An understanding of how optical and hardware decisions affect downstream AI model accuracy.
• Experience taking industrial hardware from prototype to volume deployment.
WHAT WE OFFER
• A central role architecting the hardware backbone of Visotonics' positioning and vision products, starting with the flagship crane-based container-yard positioning system.
• The opportunity to work end-to-end — from system architecture through field commissioning — alongside an experienced founding and engineering team.
• Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
• A high-ownership role with direct influence over product direction and technical decisions.
