Description

Precision Neuroscience is pioneering a brain implant, known as a brain-computer interface (BCI), to restore communication and independence for people with neurological conditions. Our cutting-edge technology is designed to empower people with paralysis to control digital devices—such as computers and smartphones—with their thoughts alone, opening new possibilities for daily life.

Precision's multidisciplinary team brings together leading experts in diverse fields such as neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, machine learning, microfabrication, electrical engineering, and more. We are committed to turning breakthrough scientific advancements into real-world solutions for people affected by conditions such as spinal cord injury, stroke, and ALS.

As a Precision employee, you will be joining one of the fastest moving and best-capitalized companies in the emerging field of BCI. Since our founding in 2021, Precision has secured over $155 million in funding, developed and validated our technology, and initiated human trials in collaboration with some of the nation's top hospitals.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Manager / Director Machine Learning to lead our efforts in developing cutting-edge machine learning solutions for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications. This role is crucial to advancing our mission of creating transformative technologies that bridge the gap between the human brain and digital systems. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of modern machine learning and signal processing in biomedical domains, a strong track record of shipping machine-learning based products in the healthcare space, along with strong leadership abilities to drive innovation and guide our team of talented ML engineers and researchers.

This position is on-site at our Santa Clara, California office. We are unable to consider fully remote workers or people not currently based in the United States, and who do not have working rights.

Key Responsibilities

Specifically, the Senior Manager / Director Machine Learning will be responsible for providing the following attributes to Precision's machine learning efforts:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute Precision Neuroscience's machine learning strategy, aligned with the company's long-term product roadmap.

  • Lead the design and implementation of machine learning models for decoding neural signals and optimizing closed-loop BCI applications. Continue to be hands on, spending between 25-50% of your time training models, writing code and reviewing code.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including neuroscience, software engineering, hardware engineering, design, and product management, to ensure seamless integration of machine learning solutions into our products.

  • Team Management and Development: Build, mentor, and manage a team of machine learning engineers and researchers, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and growth.

  • Research and Development: Drive collaborative research initiatives to explore cutting edge machine learning methodologies, algorithms, and models tailored for BCI applications.

  • Project Management: Oversee the end-to-end development lifecycle of machine learning projects, from ideation and data collection to timely model deployment and performance evaluation. Ensure ML roadmap is aligned with company objectives and communicated with key cross-functional stakeholders.

  • Data Management and Preprocessing: Lead efforts in data acquisition, cleaning, preprocessing (with neuroscience), and feature extraction to ensure high-quality inputs for machine learning models.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Serve as a key liaison between the machine learning team and other departments, ensuring alignment on project goals and deliverables with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Innovation and Intellectual Property: Identify opportunities for innovation, creativity, and experimentation within the machine learning domain, contributing to the development of intellectual property and patents.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Neuroscience, or a related field with a focus on machine learning, artificial intelligence, or signal processing.

  • At least 10+ years of experience in machine learning, with at least 5+ years in industry working on machine-learning based products.

  • Proven track record of leading machine learning teams and projects, ideally within a start-up or fast-paced, innovative environment.

  • Extensive experience in developing and deploying machine learning models, particularly in domains requiring the analysis of high-dimensional, time series data such as video or image data in real time. Experience in robotics, edge AI and low data regimes is highly desirable.

  • Deep expertise in machine learning algorithms, neural networks, deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and statistical modeling.

  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C++, or MATLAB, with experience in handling large-scale data processing.

  • Strong experience working with time-series data, preferably in healthcare or other biomedical domains.

  • Familiarity with BCI technology, neuroimaging data, and brain signal processing techniques (e.g., ECoG, EEG) preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire a diverse team of engineers and researchers, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Ability to think strategically while also being hands-on, with a willingness to dive deep into technical details when necessary.

Diverse workforces create the best culture, company, and products. We at Precision are committed to an inclusive culture that celebrates the uniqueness and contributions of everyone. As an equal opportunity employer, Precision does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
