Job Title: Polymer & Process Engineer
Location: Bangalore
Company: unWOOD (Sustainable Innovative Materials Private Limited)
Reports To: Chief Technology Officer
About Us:
unWOOD is a fast-growing deep-tech start-up creating durable, sustainable alternatives to wood. We manufacture our own patented material and convert it into high-quality furniture and infrastructure products that are built to perform in harsh outdoor environments.
We are looking for a hands-on Polymer & Process Engineer who is excited to work in a startup environment, learn fast, solve real technical problems, and contribute directly to product quality, cost reduction, new features, and market expansion.
About the Role
The Polymer & Process Engineer will work closely with the Chief Technical Officer (with more than 150 patents).
This role is ideal for someone who is technically curious, resourceful, structured in experimentation, comfortable on the shop floor, and able to convert technical instructions into practical results.
Key Responsibilities
R&D and Material Development
· Support the CTO and technical team in polymer formulation, compounding, process trials, and new material development.
· Conduct experiments to improve material properties, durability, finish, strength, UV resistance, color stability, processing ease, and product performance.
· Source and evaluate raw materials, additives, fillers, fibers, compatibilizers and other functional ingredients.
· Work with suppliers, vendors, experts, peers, and AI tools to identify new solutions and technical improvements.
· Create structured trial plans, record observations, analyze results, and prepare reports with clear conclusions and next steps.
Product Quality and Cost Improvement
· Identify opportunities to improve product quality, reduce defects, improve consistency, and enhance customer experience.
· Work on cost-reduction projects through raw material optimization, process improvements, yield improvement, and waste reduction.
· Support the development of new product features and material capabilities for future applications.
· Help translate R&D outcomes into scalable production processes.
Process Engineering and Production Support
· Support production activities by setting and improving SOPs, process parameters, quality checkpoints, and work instructions.
· Work closely with production supervisors and operators to ensure correct process execution.
· Guide shop-floor manpower during trials, production changes, quality improvement activities, and process standardization.
· Monitor production issues, identify root causes, and support corrective and preventive actions.
· Help improve productivity, machine utilization, process stability, and output quality.
Documentation and Reporting
· Maintain proper records of trials, formulations, process parameters, test results, observations, and inferences.
· Prepare simple, clear technical reports for internal review.
· Convert learnings into SOPs, checklists, quality standards, and training documents.
· Track technical problems, action items, and project progress.
Desired Skills and Competencies
· Background in polymer science, polymer engineering, plastics processing, chemical engineering, materials engineering, or related fields.
· Experience 3-6 years
· Understanding of polymer processing, compounding, extrusion, additives, fillers, and material testing will be useful.
· Ability to understand technical instructions and execute them carefully.
· Strong reasoning ability and structured problem-solving mindset.
· Ability to design experiments, observe results, infer data, and suggest next steps.
· Hands-on approach with willingness to work on the shop floor.
· Good documentation and reporting skills.
· Resourceful attitude: ability to learn from suppliers, vendors, peers, literature, and AI tools.
· Ability to get things done in a fast-moving environment.
· Comfortable working with uncertainty and solving new problems.
Startup Opportunity
This is not a narrow desk role. It is a versatile, hands-on opportunity in a high-growth startup where the candidate will get exposure to R&D, production, product development, quality, sourcing, process improvement, and commercialization.
The selected candidate will work closely with the technical leadership and have access to the management team, giving them strong visibility and learning opportunities. The role offers the chance to contribute to a deeptech materials platform at an early growth stage and help build products that can create large-scale environmental and commercial impact.
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is curious, disciplined, practical, and execution-focused. The person should enjoy solving technical problems, working with machines and materials, learning continuously, and taking ownership of results.
Experience is useful, but attitude, reasoning, hands-on ability, documentation discipline, and willingness to learn are more important.
