The Direct Support Professional is a Union and regular-full or regular part-time position.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent not required. Valid N.Y. State Driver’s License required. Background working with individuals with intellectual disabilities preferred.
Physical Demands: Depending on the needs of the individuals, may require considerable physical effort in transferring and lifting non-ambulatory and ambulatory individuals with intellectual disabilities:
Frequent lifting of up to 10lbs with occasional lifting to 100lbs. Occasional mobilization and repositioning of individuals who may weigh over 100lbs.
Occasional bending, kneeling, twisting and reaching.
Frequent walking and standing
Frequent driving of facility vans.
Working Conditions: Group home environment where individuals receive structure of daily routines through supervision. Occasionally it could be a stressful environment due to challenging behavior on the part of some individuals. Must be able to maintain calm in the face of verbal, physical and emotional challenges from individuals.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Position Summary: Assist, train, counsel and provide extensive hands-on intervention to individuals who may be medically frail and/or physically disabled and who need intensive physical intervention in carrying out their day-to-day life activities. Assist in carrying out the day-to-day provisions of active treatment programming according to the individual treatment plan. Maintain a personalized, home-like environment within the residential facility. Provide each individual the opportunity to be independent and productive according to their capabilities with opportunities for choice and physical and social integration into their community. Assist individuals to know, understand and exercise their personal rights as appropriate to each. Cooperate with the overall program, policies, procedures and goals of the agency.

Job Description
Function A: Provide total care through extensive hands-on intervention to individuals who are physically as well as intellectually disabled in the areas of personal care, self-care, recreational services, communication, behavioral intervention and all other habilitation services offered to individuals as determined by the individual treatment plan and the cooperative efforts of other staff members
Function B: Assist in planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating individual service goals and total group home functioning and goals.
Function C: Maintain accurate, complete and up to date records and reports.
Function D: Safely transport individuals to social and recreational activities, medication administration, medical appointments, and other destinations as required.
Other duties could be assigned.

The Direct Support Professional reports to Residential Management.
