POSITION: Pipeline Designer
Education: Diploma Mechanical Engineer/bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering
Experience: Minimum 7 - 20 years in Design of Pumping Stations, Piping, steel tanks, Pipeline etc. Preferred with UAE Consultancy Experience
Location: Chennai
A pipeline designer in the oil & gas industry is the person who turns process and routing ideas into buildable pipeline systems—onshore or offshore—that safely move oil, gas.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Design pipeline layouts (routing, elevations, crossings, tie-ins)
- Create drawings and models (plan & profile, alignment sheets, isometrics)
- Size and specify pipes, valves, fittings, supports
- Coordinate with process, civil, Geotech, and environmental teams
- Ensure designs meet codes & standards (ASME B31.4 / B31.8, API, ISO, client specs)
- Consider constructability: welding, trenching, HDD, pigging, maintenance access
- AutoCAD / AutoCAD Plant 3D
- EPC companies (engineering & construction firms)
- Oil & gas operators
- Pipeline transmission companies
- Offshore projects (platforms, subsea tiebacks) or onshore (cross-country lines)
- Strong understanding of piping standards
- Ability to read P&IDs and route surveys
- Practical mindset (construction experience is a big plus)
- Pipeline design & analysis
- Wall thickness, diameter, material selection
- Hydraulic analysis (steady state / transient)
- Stress & flexibility analysis (onshore / offshore)
- Route engineering
- Alignment sheets, crossings (road, river, rail)
- Terrain, Geotech, and constructability input
- Code compliance
- ASME B31.4 / B31.8
- API, ISO, DNV (esp. offshore)
- Calculations & reports
- Design basis, alignment sheets, crossing details
- Class location, MAOP, corrosion allowance
- Support to design & construction
- Review drawings from designers
- Respond to RFIs, site queries, as-built updates
