The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, invites applications from highly motivated candidates for a Full-Time Ph.D. position under the guidance of Prof. Dr. C S Sumesh.
About the Project:
The proposed Ph.D. research focuses on developing Artificial Intelligence-driven models for prediction and optimization of dry turning processes of hard-to-machine materials such as titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys, and hardened steels. The study will combine experimental machining trials, numerical modeling, and machine learning techniques to predict responses such as surface roughness, tool wear, cutting force, material removal rate, and surface integrity. The expected outcome is an AI-based intelligent machining framework for process planning, parameter optimization, cost reduction, tool life improvement, and enhanced productivity. The research has strong applications in aerospace, defence, biomedical, energy, and smart manufacturing sectors.
Eligibility:
Candidates with M.E./M.Tech. in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Production, Industrial, Automobile, Mechatronics, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Candidates with exposure to AI, ML, Data Science, or computational modeling are also welcome.
Desired Skills:
Knowledge of machining processes, cutting tools, material behavior, programming in Python/MATLAB, and familiarity with ML techniques (Random Forest, SVR, XGBoost, ANN) is preferred. Interest in experimental research, optimization, and publication-oriented research is desirable.
