Position Description

The Junior Tooling and Support Engineer will be a part of the digital team that manages the organization’s web properties and creates interactive data visualizations and other digital features based on the Center’s work. The primary focus of this position will be working with the Editorial Engineering team to build developer tooling and automated processes related to code analysis and deployments as well as provide first level client support and triage.

This is a term-limited, grant-funded position expected to extend 18 months.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and other digital stakeholders on the development, initial creation, and management of a testing suite, dev tooling, and deployment workflows.
  • Ensure that all code is error-free, maintainable, and scales to handle a high number of concurrent, complex transactions.
  • Provide quality assurance and testing of other team members’ code.
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and contribute to style guides.

Knowledge And Skill Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript and WordPress/PHP tooling and industry practices.
  • Expert knowledge of Webpack, Node, and related web technologies.
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to build and maintain strong relationships with project stakeholders.
  • Expert knowledge of GitHub Actions/Workflows.
  • Ability to be creative and innovative, set priorities, organize time and identify resources for projects.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to review designs/wireframes, point out potential development concerns, and create user stories based on designs.
  • Ability to write and maintain user and system documentation for applications and processes.

Education/Training/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1-3 years professional experience developing web, mobile and other digital projects.
  • 1-3 years JavaScript experience required.
  • Experience with modern WordPress development.
  • WordPress plugin development a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience working with REST APIs, preferably in a read/write manner. Understanding of common data storage techniques a plus.
  • Git experience.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Typical starting salary: $90,000

Location

Pew Research Center staff are required to be present in the Center’s Washington, D.C., office two core days weekly (Tuesday, Wednesday). Staff may work virtually from remote locations on other days in a typical work week.
